On the morning of April 20, the People's Council of Soc Trang province held the 32nd Session (Special Session). At this session, delegates approved the proposal on the arrangement of provincial and commune-level administrative units.

Accordingly, Soc Trang province will merge with Hau Giang province and Can Tho city, named Can Tho city and the administrative center in the current Can Tho city.
After the merger, Can Tho city has an area of 6,360.83 km2 (reaching 424.05% of the standard), population of 4,061,292 people (reaching 406.12% of the standard). The city has 100 administrative units including 31 wards and 69 communes. This arrangement will help reduce 2 provincial-level administrative units, 28 district-level administrative units and 163 commune-level administrative units compared to the present.
For the Project to reorganize commune-level administrative units of Soc Trang province, after the reorganization, it will reduce from 108 communes and wards to 43 communes and wards (including 8 wards and 35 communes), with 4 administrative units remaining unchanged due to meeting the standards and having separate locations: Phong Nam commune (Ke Sach district); My Phuoc commune (My Tu district); Vinh Hai commune and Lai Hoa commune (Vinh Chau town)

Ms. Ho Thi Cam Dao - Permanent Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Council of Soc Trang Province - suggested the provincial People's Committee to complete the scheme to arrange the administrative unit at the provincial level in accordance with the prescribed plan and time; Ensuring the general progress to submit the project file to the Ministry of Home Affairs before 1.5.2025. Preparing adequate facilities and premises for the end of the activities of the current district -level administrative units from 1.7.2025.
At the meeting, delegates also voted to approve the Report on the draft Resolution on measures to ensure the implementation of democracy at the grassroots level in Soc Trang province.
