On the afternoon of September 18, at the Presidential Palace, Politburo member and President Luong Cuong received United Nations Permanent Coordinator Pauline Tamesis and heads of state representatives of United Nations organizations in Vietnam on the occasion of preparing to attend the 80th United Nations General Assembly High-Level Discussion in New York, USA.
The President shared some of Vietnam's key messages at the discussion session, including telling the "story of Vietnam" overcoming difficulties, healing war wounds, transforming and rising strongly, deeply integrating internationally, and calling on countries to respect the value of peace and strong transformation to create a sustainable future.
The head of the State of Vietnam reiterated the stance of strongly supporting multilateralism and the central role of the United Nations in global governance, emphasizing that Vietnam will continue to take concrete actions to actively and responsibly contribute to the common work of the world for peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and globally.
Welcoming the UN80 Initiative of the United Nations Secretary-General, the President said that this is an important basis for countries to discuss and promote strong reforms, helping the United Nations better adapt to global challenges and affirmed that Vietnam supports and will contribute to this process, ready to welcome United Nations agencies and organizations to open offices and centers in Vietnam.
The President affirmed that Vietnam supports the central role of the United Nations in building a global cooperation and governance framework on artificial intelligence, and will continue to seriously implement international commitments on climate change, implementing the Joint Stock Office on Fair Energy Transition (JETP).
President Luong Cuong suggested that the United Nations side closely coordinate with Vietnam to successfully organize the official visit of United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres and the Opening Ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime in Hanoi at the end of October 2025.
At the meeting, the United Nations Resident Coordinator highly appreciated Vietnam's leadership role and strong commitment to support multilateralism and the United Nations in the context of many current challenges.
Ms. Tamesis emphasized that the 80th United Nations General Assembly is a pivotal moment to promote international cooperation on peace, development and human rights, and at the same time acknowledged Vietnam's impressive achievements in these fields, especially poverty reduction, socio-economic development, institutional reform, gender equality, inclusive development, leaving no one behind.
The coordinator especially appreciated Vietnam's major policies on international integration, digital transformation, energy security, education - training, healthcare, focusing on people and businesses. Welcoming Vietnam's determination and reform achievements in recent times, Ms. Coordinator said that these are valuable lessons for the United Nations and other countries to refer to.
Ms. Tamesis affirmed that the United Nations will continue to accompany and support Vietnam in implementing commitments on sustainable development, climate change response, equitable energy transition, promoting gender equality, and aiming to achieve the set strategic goals.
