On February 24, the People's Council of Kien Giang province held its 32nd session (special session) to pass a number of important resolutions of the province.
The session voted to approve the draft resolution on approving the policy of establishing Tho Chau district in Kien Giang province.
According to the People's Committee of Kien Giang province, Tho Chau district was established with a natural area of 13.98 km2 and a population of more than 1,800 people.
After its establishment, Tho Chau district has no commune level, Phu Quoc city has 8 affiliated commune-level administrative units (including 2 wards and 6 communes); Kien Giang province has 16 district-level administrative units (including 13 districts and 3 cities).
Tho Chau commune has a particularly important position in terms of national defense, security and socio-economic development of the Mekong Delta, of the whole country and the region. Tho Chau commune is one of two archipelagos of Phu Quoc city, located in the southwest of Phu Quoc city and in the extreme southwest of Vietnam, consisting of 8 islands, of which Tho Chu island is the largest island in the archipelago, with an area of about 12.40km2.
Tho Chau has a historical sea area adjacent to Cambodia and Thailand, about 101km southwest of Phu Quoc City center, about 220km from Rach Gia City.
The implementation of the development policy mechanisms of Tho Chau island commune has revealed many shortcomings in exploiting potential and mobilizing development resources, requiring the establishment of a suitable district-level government organization model to meet development requirements.
With the functions, tasks, and powers of a commune-level administrative unit, it is not enough to exploit the existing potential and advantages. In foreign relations, developing trade with partners, especially in handling administrative procedures that face many difficulties in authority, domestic and foreign investors have not boldly invested due to concerns about administrative procedures in the condition that the distance from Tho Chau to Phu Quoc is quite far, travel is expensive, and procedures are not really airy, which will not have a negative impact on investment efficiency.
In the trend of international integration, Tho Chau has many advantages for development, so meeting the fastest and best requirements on administrative procedures for partners is a prerequisite for development.
Tho Chau district was established to meet management requirements in the area that are in the process of development and implementation of the program to bring people to the island and mobilize people to stick to the sea and islands. In particular, enhancing civilization associated with economic development with national defense - security, environmental protection on islands, in order to establish national sovereignty, creating a legal basis for the organization of the district-level government apparatus with sufficient capacity to carry out the set goals and tasks.
The establishment of Tho Chau district - a comprehensive and comprehensive solution not only for the goal of sustainable growth and development of Phu Quoc's socio-economy in general and Tho Chau in particular but also a common goal of the national development strategy.
From the urgent administrative political task requirements, it is necessary to adjust the boundaries of Phu Quoc City's administrative units to establish Tho Chau district in Kien Giang province as a strategic task in building and defending the Fatherland in the new situation.
