Trust paves the way for Vietnam - US relations to break out

Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Nguyen Quoc Dung affirmed that over the past 30 years, the Vietnam - US relationship has developed because the two sides have built trust, shared strategic benefits and committed to substantive cooperation.

Speaking to VNA on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the normalization of Vietnam-US relations (July 12, 1995 - July 12, 2025), Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Nguyen Quoc Dung said that 30 years is a very meaningful milestone. From two former warring friends after the war, the two countries have overcome the gap to become Comprehensive Strategic Partners. This is a rare journey in international relations. For Vietnam, this is the result of a consistent foreign policy - independence, self-reliance, multilateralization, and deep integration for peace and development.

According to Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Dung, the Vietnam-US relationship has developed because the two sides have built trust, shared strategic benefits and committed to substantive cooperation. First, the vision and political determination of the leaders of the two countries. Second, it is the principle of mutual respect, especially respect for the independence, sovereignty and political institutions of each side. Third, it is a joint effort to overcome the consequences of war - such as detoxification, bomb and mine clearing, support for victims of Agent Orange, search for missing people - actions of profound humanitarian value. And fourth, it is a strong driving force from economic and trade cooperation, with turnover increasing more than 200 times in 30 years. That has made Vietnam a leading partner of the US in ASEAN.

In the context of the world and the region continuing to change rapidly, the Vietnam - US relationship still maintains stability and positive development momentum. This shows that this is a relationship with strategic depth, complementing each other, capable of adaptation and bringing practical benefits to both sides.

In the coming time, the two countries can prioritize promoting cooperation in some prominent areas. First of all, the economy - trade - investment, with a focus on high technology, supply chains, technology agriculture and digital transformation. Vietnam wishes to become a trusted partner of the US in the global supply chain.

Science - technology and innovation cooperation is also a new highlight, especially in areas such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, clean energy and healthcare. Education - training of high-quality human resources, national defense - security, people-to-people exchanges and overcoming the consequences of war will continue to be important pillars. These are all areas that have been clearly identified by the leaders of the two countries when upgrading their relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in September 2023.

Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Dung emphasized that over the past 30 years, Vietnam and the US have gone a long way, creating a special relationship - not only through history, but also through the way the two countries have overcome history to look towards the future.

"In the coming period, we expect the relationship between the two countries to continue to be raised to a new level - not only in terms of cooperation, but also in terms of depth of mutual understanding and trust. The important thing is to build a solid social foundation for bilateral relations - where the people of the two countries, especially the younger generation, understand each other better, learn from each other, and together create common values. We hope that American friends will continue to accompany Vietnam - not only as a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, but also as sincere friends, sharing the aspiration for a peaceful, stable and inclusive world. Vietnam will continue to be a reliable and responsible partner, working with the US to create a better future for the region and the world" - Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Dung said.
