The new name has many meanings...
There have been many different options in naming new wards, after the arrangement in Thanh Hoa City, including the option of choosing to name them in order: Hac Thanh 1,2,3,4 and Dong Son 1,2,3.
However, in the end, the project chose to name 7 new wards after the arrangement with names associated with the local historical and cultural traditions including: Hac Thanh, Quang Phu, Dong Quang, Dong Son, Dong Tien, Ham Rong, Nguyet Vien.
Among them are names with profound historical and cultural values such as Hac Thanh, Dong Son, Ham Rong, Nguyet Vien...
Many voters and people, cultural researchers agree with the names of these new commune-level administrative units, especially the return of Dong Son name and the restoration of Hac Thanh and Ham Rong names.
Some other localities also plan to have new meaningful names after the arrangement such as Lang Chanh district to establish Linh Son commune on the basis of merging the entire natural area and population of Tri Nang commune and Lang Chanh town.
Linh Son is a new name chosen from the old place name "Chi Linh Son" - the place associated with the Lam Son uprising.
Thach Thanh district retains the name of Ngoc Trao commune, a famous revolutionary battlefield relic on the basis of merging the entire natural area and population of the communes: Ngoc Trao, Thanh An, Thanh Long, Thanh Tam.
Ba Thuoc district will have a new commune named after the famous tourist area of Pu Luong on the basis of merging the entire natural area and population of the communes: Lung Niem, Thanh Lam, Thanh Son. 3 communes: Luong Noi, Luong Trung, Luong Ngoai are also arranged with new names: Quy Luong commune.
Similarly, Nong Cong district renamed the two new communes Thang Loi (on the basis of merging the entire natural area and population of the communes: Trung Thanh, Te Nong, Te Thang, Te Loi) and Truong Van (on the basis of merging the entire natural area and population of the communes: Truong Minh, Truong Trung, Truong Son, Truong Giang).
Hau Loc district established Van Loc commune on the basis of merging the entire natural area and population of the communes: Minh Loc, Hai Loc, Hung Loc, Ngu Loc, Da Loc.
In Quang Xuong district, the new commune name is based on the old place name that was once associated with history and tradition, deeply imbued with the subconscious of local people such as Luu Ve commune.

Sam Son city plans to arrange 10 wards and Quang Giao commune in Quang Xuong district and part of the administrative boundary of Quang Cat ward in Thanh Hoa city into 2 wards with the names Sam Son 1 ward and Sam Son 2 ward.
For example, Bim Son town reorganizes 7 wards, communes and Ha Vinh commune in Ha Trung district into 2 wards: Bim Son 1 and Bim Son 2.
Nghi Son town, after being reorganized from 30 wards, will have the largest number of commune-level administrative units in Thanh Hoa province with 10 units, including 8 wards and 2 communes, named in order from Nghi Son 1 ward to Nghi Son 8 ward. The two communes are named Nghi Son 9 commune and Nghi Son 10 commune.
Similarly, 6 districts use the formula of naming new communes = district name + consecutive numbers including: Ha Trung district: arrange 18 communes and towns into 5 communes to become new names: Ha Trung 1, Ha Trung 2...

In addition, some districts also chose the option suggested by the Ministry of Home Affairs, to keep the district name for a new commune, and keep some old communes intact during the arrangement process to avoid disruption of administrative procedures at the grassroots level.
In the whole Thanh Hoa province, only Muong Lat district changed the town's name to Muong Lat commune, keeping the administrative boundary of 8 units as before.
According to the project, Thanh Hoa province will reorganize 529 commune-level administrative units (including 435 communes, 63 wards, 31 towns) into 166 new commune-level administrative units including: 18 wards and 148 communes (73 plain communes, 75 mountainous communes). The number of communes and towns bordering Laos is 16. The whole province reduced 381 commune-level administrative units compared to the present, equivalent to a decrease of 69.65%.
