From here, the two localities closed a separate development journey, while opening up great expectations for a comprehensive transformation of the Central key economic region.
The time to separate history
In November 1996, the 9th National Assembly passed a resolution dividing Quang Nam - Da Nang province into two administrative units: Quang Nam province and Da Nang city under the Central Government. This decision creates conditions for each locality to promote its own strengths.
After nearly three decades, Da Nang has become a modern type I urban area, while Quang Nam has risen with heritage-rich lands, strong industrial development and rural areas that are constantly innovated. However, the administrative boundary between the two localities - although adjacent - has become a significant barrier in connecting infrastructure, investing, and serving the people.
According to the direction from the Central Government, Quang Nam and Da Nang will become a provincial-level administrative unit, operating under the two-level government model (province - commune/ward) from July 1, 2025.
Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Nam province Le Van Dung said: "Since the separation, the two localities have developed very well, with similar indicators such as economic scale, budget revenue, population... The merger will expand space and development opportunities more strongly".
Mr. Dung also emphasized that major tasks related to people's lives such as infrastructure projects and public welfare are not stopped because of mergers.
"We are determined to focus on resolving the issue completely, especially the elimination of temporary houses for people - which will be completed before the end of October this year," Mr. Dung emphasized at a recent meeting with voters.
Expanding development space
According to the business community, the merger not only has the meaning of administrative management but also opens up a unified and large market. With a double population size, abundant labor resources and interconnected development space, the merged Quang - Da area creates great attraction for investors.
Mr. Nguyen Minh Tri, representative of a real estate enterprise present in both Da Nang and Hoi An, commented: "We have high expectations for policy synchronization, especially procedures for granting investment, land and construction permits. Previously, each place had its own style, taking a lot of time and money".
Many businesses in the tourism - service sector also believe that the merger will help increase product connectivity, form multi-point tours, extend the length of stay and spending of tourists such as: Hoi An - Ba Na - My Son - An Bang beach - Son Tra peninsula.
At the same time, industrial parks and economic zones such as Chu Lai, Hoa Khanh, and Lien Chieu will be planned in a unified manner, creating a clearer regional competitive advantage.
With more than 3 million people, a natural area of about 11,867km2, a synchronous seaport - airport - heritage - industrial park system, the newly merged Da Nang City is expected to become a "new growth center of the Central region", attracting investment, promoting sustainable development.
