According to Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Thanh, Politburo Member, Chairman of the Lao National Assembly Saysomphone Phomvihane passed away on August 8, 2026.
Comrade is a key leader of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, a person who has made many important contributions to the Lao revolutionary cause as well as in the cause of protecting, building and developing Laos.
Comrade is a leader who plays an important role in inheriting, nurturing and developing the great friendship, special solidarity, comprehensive cooperation, and strategic linkage between Vietnam and Laos. Comrade's passing is a great loss for Laos and Vietnam - Laos relations.

To express mourning for Comrade Saysomphone Phomvihane and stemming from the special relationship between Vietnam and Laos; the Central Executive Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front decided to observe the mourning of Comrade Saysomphone Phomvihane according to the National Funeral ceremony for 2 days, from August 10 to August 11, 2026.
Previously, on the afternoon of August 9, 2026, in Vientiane capital (Laos), Politburo Member, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man led a high-level delegation of the Party and State of Vietnam to pay respects to Politburo Member, National Assembly Chairman of Laos Saysomphone Phomvihane.
