In the afternoon of August 9, 2026, in Vientiane capital (Laos), Politburo Member, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man led a high-level delegation of the Party and State of Vietnam to pay respects to Politburo Member, National Assembly Chairman of Laos Saysomphone Phomvihane.
Politburo Member, President of the Lao National Assembly Saysomphone Phomvihane passed away on August 8, 2026.
To express condolences to Comrade Saysomphone Phomvihane and stemming from the special relationship between Vietnam and Laos, on August 9, the Central Executive Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front issued a special notice deciding to observe the national mourning for Comrade Saysomphone Phomvihane according to the National Funeral ceremony for 2 days, from August 10 to August 11, 2026.
Previously, a special announcement from the Central Executive Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, together with the National Assembly, Government of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, the Lao Front for National Construction and the family of Phomvihane said that comrade Saysomphone Phomvihane passed away at 11:18 am on August 8, 2026, due to severe vascular disease, at the age of 70.
The press release emphasized that Comrade Saysomphone Phomvihane is one of the key leading cadres of the Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, a person with knowledge, capacity, sensitivity and rich experience, who has held leadership positions in localities and many industries and fields; is a leader with many outstanding achievements.
To honor the merits and express deep condolences to Comrade Saysomphone Phomvihane, the Central Committee of the Party, the National Assembly, the Government of the Lao People's Democratic Republic and the Central Committee of the Lao Front for National Construction decided to hold a national funeral for 5 days, from August 9 to August 13, 2026, at the National Convention Center. The memorial service will be held on August 13, 2026 at That Luang Square.
