According to VNA, during nearly 30 years of working in the geological map industry (1959-1986), comrade Tran Duc Luong has traveled throughout the mountainous areas, surveyed and researched geology, making an important contribution to the construction of a national resource database to serve socio-economic development.
A typical example is Vietnam Geological Map at a scale of 1/500,000 (published in 1981) co-authored by him (a project of cooperation between the Soviet Union and Vietnam). This is a large-scale project, with strategic significance in resource management and socio-economic development. In addition to this project, he and his colleagues in the Department of Geological Mapping made a 1/500,000 scale Vietnam Mineral Mapping (published in 1988). These two works were awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Science and Technology in 2005.
As General Director of the General Department of Geology of Vietnam, he has organized the comprehensive implementation of basic investigation, mineral search and exploration across the country. At the same time, reorganize the system of geological units under the conditions of a unified country. Along with that, it helps Laos and Cambodia organize new geological federations.
When moving to the field of State management, comrade Tran Duc Luong continued to affirm his role as a leader with strategic vision, capable of covering many complex areas.
As Vice Chairman of the Council of Ministers (1987-1992) and then Deputy Prime Minister (1992-1997), he made many contributions to the process of innovating economic management thinking, contributing to the country's overcoming of socio-economic difficulties, gradually stabilizing and developing.
In particular, as President (1997-2006) - a period of strong transformation of the country, President Tran Duc Luong has made many contributions to the development of the country.
Internally, under the direction of him and his Party and State leaders, reforms in institutions, organizational structure and administrative procedures have been gradually implemented, creating a foundation for modernization and integration. He paid great attention to the work of building a socialist rule of law state, promoting administrative reform, building a clean and dedicated team of cadres and civil servants.
In terms of foreign affairs, he has made an important contribution to expanding international cooperation, enhancing Vietnam's position and prestige in the international arena. The image of President Tran Duc Luong in meetings with the head of the government, overseas visits or in welcoming international delegations left an impression of a gentle, intelligent and courageous head of the government. He also always demonstrates a consistent stance on protecting sovereignty and national independence, while promoting diplomacy, peace, friendship and development.

According to Dr. To Van Truong - former Director of the Southern Institute of Water Resources Planning, former President Tran Duc Luong used to be a geological engineer, a profession that required meticulousness, precision and perseverance. Perhaps that starting point has trained him in a very meticulous working style, not based on slogans, not liking prominence, but going into practice, especially in issues of resource management, environment and planning territory.
Having held the position of Deputy Prime Minister and then President for a long time during a period of profound change in the country, "he was a quiet statesman, but his intelligence and influence silently spread and endured" - Dr. To Van Truong shared.
The departure of former President Tran Duc Luong left a deep grief in the hearts of compatriots, comrades and international friends. His name and career will always be respected in the history of the Vietnamese revolution. In a special statement on the national funeral former President Tran Duc Luong stated: For more than 50 years of revolutionary activities, he has made great contributions to the glorious revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation. He was awarded the Gold Star Medal by the Party and the State, the 65 -year -old Party Badge and many other medals, medals, rewards and noble titles.
