New low pressure strengthens into Typhoon Nangka, forecast direction in the next 24 hours

Tropical storm Nangka formed from a low pressure area and is currently more than 2,000km north of the northern tip of Luzon Island, moving eastward.

On August 12 (Philippines time), according to the latest weather forecast from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), tropical storm Nangka has formed and is being monitored outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

PAGASA said that at 8:00 AM on August 12, the storm's center was located about 20,000km east of the northernmost point of Luzon Island. Storm Nangka has maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h, gusts up to 80 km/h and is moving east at a speed of 10 km/h.

Typhoon Nangka developed from a low pressure area called LPA 08d, which PAGASA monitored outside PAR. By 8:00 PM on August 11, the Philippine weather agency confirmed that this system had strengthened into a tropical depression. After that, the intensity continued to increase and the system was upgraded to a tropical storm, internationally named Nangka.

Nangka's strengthening into a storm only took place in a short time after the system was still being monitored as a low pressure. However, Nangka's current location is still far from the Philippines, and the storm is moving east, i.e. away from the Luzon area.

According to the latest monitoring information, Nangka is currently located north of the Mariana Islands and is operating in the area affected by the monsoon. This system is forecast to change direction of movement in the near future.

Typhoon Nangka initially has the potential to move northeast under the influence of a high pressure area located southeast. Then, the typhoon may slow down and gradually shift north as the influence of this high pressure area competes with another high pressure area located east of Hokkaido, Japan.

The above developments show that the trajectory of Typhoon Nangka may change significantly during its movement. Therefore, the current direction cannot be considered the storm's fixed trajectory in the coming days.

Currently, Filipinos are advised to monitor official weather information from PAGASA to update any changes related to this system.
