We came to a small house located along the road in Tan Nguyen hamlet, Ngai Tu commune. In that simple house, Son An Thuan (born 2000) is fighting against illness every day. At the age of 25, when his peers are working and starting a career, Thuan has to close his life to the hospital bed.
On a small bed placed in the middle of a simple house, Thuan lay motionless with legs aching for a long time. Few people thought that this 25-year-old young man used to be the main breadwinner, struggling by working as a worker in a foreign land.
Before developing the disease, Thuan worked as a worker in Dong Nai. At the beginning of 2026, Thuan began to develop the disease. From a healthy young man, Thuan gradually became exhausted, his legs were weak, walking was difficult, and he had to lie in one place for many months.
When asked what he wanted most at this time, Thuan only softly replied in a weak voice: "I hope to recover from my illness to go to work." The short sentence but containing the simple aspiration of a young person who is being robbed of his youth by illness.
According to the treatment records at Can Tho Central General Hospital, Thuan was diagnosed with Basedow's thyroid toxicity, polyarthritis, gastroesophageal reflux and non-specific rapid heartbeat. Although he has been discharged from the hospital, he still has to have re-examination and long-term treatment.
Prolonged pain makes Thuan almost unable to take care of himself. Eating, bathing, cleaning, or changing diapers all have to be supported by relatives. Every day that passes for him is endurance both physically and mentally.
Thuan's situation makes many people even more heartbroken when his father died early, his mother suffered a stroke and passed away a few years ago. The family has no land to produce, the most valuable assets are only the foundation of the house and the old house of gratitude that is sheltering from the sun and rain.
Thuan's two older sisters are both married. One is a hired worker in Ho Chi Minh City, life is precarious. The other is also struggling to make a living, raising three young children, so they do not have enough conditions to regularly take care of their seriously ill younger brother.
Currently, Thuan is being taken in by his uncle, Mr. Thach Pha, to take care of. Mr. Pha said that his family is also in difficulty raising his 92-year-old mother who is bedridden. The family's three rice fields (1000m2/cong) have been rented out for many years because they no longer have the working capacity to cultivate.
Mr. Pha choked up and shared that every time he takes his grandchild to the hospital, he has to ask relatives to take turns supporting him. What he hopes most is that Thuan will recover soon so that he can walk, work and live the life of a true young person.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Chinh, a neighbor who regularly helps Thuan, said that people in the neighborhood who love him contribute a little rice, a box of milk or a few hundred thousand VND. However, those spontaneous help only partly share the immediate difficulties.
Ms. Dang Kim Ngan - representative of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ngai Tu commune said that the whole commune currently has 109 poor households and 261 near-poor households. Thuan's family is in particularly difficult circumstances, so in the past time they have always been supported by the locality with practical gifts from philanthropists.
According to Ms. Ngan, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the commune will continue to coordinate with relevant units to review and consider appropriate support directions, and at the same time study the consideration of monthly allowances if Thuan meets the conditions according to regulations.
In the immediate future, Thuan really needs the community's cooperation to have funds for re-examination, buying medicine, milk, diapers and covering travel costs during treatment. For that 25-year-old boy, getting up to walk, returning to work and supporting himself is still his biggest dream amidst the days of illness.
