Carrying the whole family
For decades, with only one arm left, Mr. Ho Thanh Hai (born in 1956, residing in Dieu Tri village, Tuy Phuoc commune, Gia Lai) has been working for hire, running the fields, carrying goods, helping the lake... as long as he has money to support his whole family and send his children to school. Life is difficult but warm.
A lifetime of hardship and floods without time to rest, a storm came, then the flood passed, his small house had part of its roof swept away, and all of its furniture was soaked in water, almost completely damaged. Poor families are increasingly exhausted, no longer able to make ends meet
"At nearly 70 years old, I have never witnessed such a terrible storm and flood. The house collapsed, so from the storm to the flood, my family took shelter. When he returned, the house was devastated. The house is small, now there are only more than ten square meters left, when part of the house was swept away by the storm, there is no money to repair it," said Mr. Hai.
In 1978, when he was a young man, he went to the forest to work for hire, but unfortunately hit a bullet ( mine) and lost an arm. From there, the work became more difficult, the income was unstable, whoever hired him did whatever he wanted, as long as he had money.
The man who has endured for his whole life is now exhausted after years of burdening his family. Having never had a break, his shoulders are now tired and weakened over time.
With no fields or gardens, to make ends meet, Mr. Hai and his wife work as plastic rattan weaving, earning only 30-40,000 VND/day, day of presence, day of absence, depending on the order. The monthly salary is only received at the end of the month, so we have to borrow it first to spend, then deduct it.
"I'm old, I only have one hand left, I can't do heavy work anymore. A few tens of thousands of dong are enough to cover vegetables and porridge every day. Where is the money to repair the house for me, Mr. Hai choked up.
Two children, a boy and a girl, are married but have not yet escaped poverty. They want to help their parents, but their strength and conditions are too limited.
Worries still hang on the roof
Mr. Hai's house is located near the train track, with a high roof across the road. A small house is now in disrepair after storms and floods. The inside is trong, the walls are damp, the remaining roof is also weak, revealing many cracks.
Occasionally, Mr. Hai went to the back room of his house - lacking a roof - to look up at the sky, not knowing where to start. In the past few nights, he has been un sleepy and anxious when he heard that storm No. 15 was coming, worried that his house would be empty if natural disasters hit again.
What he and his wife need most right now is to reinforce their house and re-roof the roof. When he learned that the Golden Heart of Labor Social Charity Fund - Lao Dong Newspaper decided to support 20 million VND, Mr. Hai was stunned and did not dare to believe it.
Mr. Hai's wife - Ms. Do Thi Bang (68 years old) - burst into tears: "My whole life has been miserable, I have never held such a large sum of money. People help me repair the house, sir".
"After the storm and flood, my family also received rice boxes and rice bags from benefactors. Now that I have this money, I will repair the house immediately. Even if I had a dream, I wouldn't dare to think of helping so much, this amount of money is huge," Mr. Hai said happily.
The miserable faces of the poor couple have somewhat subsided, when their worries have been removed. "My wife and I would like to sincerely thank the Golden Heart Fund - Lao Dong Newspaper for giving us a helping hand, helping our family repair our house and stabilize our lives," Mr. Hai expressed.
They deserve help
Dieu Tri village has 1,047 households with 4,638 people. The storm and flood caused 1 house to collapse, completely blown off the roofs of 5 houses, 2 houses had 50% blown off the roofs; more than 90% of houses were flooded from 1-3m, and furniture was severely damaged.
Mr. Tran Anh Tuan (62 years old) - Secretary and Head of Dieu Tri village - said that Mr. Hai's family is in a difficult situation. The couple is old, no longer able to work, have low income, and just enough to make a living.
"Uncle Hai is one of the poor households in the village, life is very difficult. He deserved this help. On behalf of the whole village, I would like to thank the Golden Heart Fund - Lao Dong Newspaper for their concern and help people stabilize their lives after natural disasters," said Mr. Tuan.
