On December 13, a day before the impeachment vote of President Yoon Suk Yeol, more than 100 Democratic Party lawmakers, including leader Park Chan Dae, gathered on the steps of the National Assembly building in Yeouido, Seoul.
They held Kpop lightsticks in their hands, showing their determination to push for the president's impeachment.
This comes after a trend of protesters holding up lightsticks from various Kpop fandoms during protests calling for the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol in recent days.
Last week, hundreds of thousands of people gathered across Seoul for protests that included many K-pop fans, but what was unique was that they carried lightsticks instead of traditional candles.
The protesters also created a stunning scene when they sang Kpop songs in unison such as "Into the New World" by SNSD, "Whiplash" by aespa and "Ring Ding Dong" by SHINee...
The story of politician Lee Hoon Gi buying a Stray Kids lightstick to support the public protest has drawn attention. After that, many politicians and lawmakers bought other Kpop lightsticks.
In photos taken in front of the National Assembly building, Democratic Party lawmaker Jung Jin Wook was seen holding an NCT lightstick labeled “Impeach Yoon Suk Yeol.” Lawmaker Choi Min Hee was seen holding a NewJeans lightstick with an angry bunny expression.
Other lightsticks of famous Kpop artists and groups such as SNSD, EXO, BTS, SHINee and IU were also discovered at the scene. Many of them have unusual shapes such as long swords and stars for protest activities.
Under a post that attracted more than 65,000 views on theqoo, netizens commented: “It feels like they are thanking people in their 20s and 30s”, “It’s great to see them understanding and participating in youth culture like this”…
