Director reveals part 2 of Korean drama Study Group

Director Lee Jang Hoon talks about the potential for a sequel after the success of the Korean drama School District - Study Group.

Based on the famous webtoon of the same name, the Korean film Study Group tells the story of one-hitman One-hitman (Hwang Min Hyun) - a student who aspires to study well but is only born with fighting talent. Coming to a notorious school, Ga Min established a learning group to survive the harsh entrance exam at the school considered the worst.

Hankook Ilbo commented that with a strong plot, a way to build young characters combined with many thrilling action scenes and word-of-mouth effects, Study Group quickly caused a fever on the OTT (online) platforms Tving, Viu, despite being assessed as not suitable for adolescents.

Speaking about Study Group, director Lee Jang Hoon said that the film has a special place for him. The success of the work is not only about making a splash but also bringing opportunities to the actors.

Its great to see that the audience not only loves the drama but also develops affection for the actors. Before, I used to read the information on the release date, but this time I saw the reaction on online communities. For me, the past 5 weeks (aired) have been a dream.

However, initially, Study Group was not a highly anticipated project. The reason is that although based on a famous webtoon, at that time, Joo Ji Hoon's medical drama "The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call" was creating a global fever, so "Study Group" was not widely promoted.

On the other hand, the fact that the male lead Hwang Min Hyun is currently serving his military service is also considered a disadvantage. But after 1 week of broadcasting, thanks to the bright spots in content, acting, and sophisticated handling of school violence instead of detailed description or honoring the culprit, Study Group had an impressive back-to-back performance.

Talking about the potential for production of part 2, the director said: To be honest, until the release time, I had no plans to do part 2. I want to explore new things after working here for 2 and a half years. But in the past 5 weeks, I started to wonder if I should do it.

I actually have a deep affection for the actors, especially Hwang Min Hyun, and I am currently considering the idea of whether we can make it more interesting than part 1. Because for a film, the most important thing is still the script.

According to Lee Jang Hoon, if there is a part 2, Ga Min's uncle character will be revealed more. However, on the producer's side, they said that part 2 of the film "has not been confirmed".
