Musician Hoang Kieu in the memories of those who stay
When mentioning musician Hoang Kieu, people immediately remember the play Quy Van. Music theorist Nguyen Quang Long assessed that the play Chuoi Van by musician Hoang Kieu can be considered an artistic milestone, where he brought the Cheo to the peak of expressing music.
Through his creations, musician Hoang Kieu contributed to shaping and orienting: musical structure in a Cheo play; the role of musical instruments and ensembles; the technique of writing the chord and organizing the harmony for Cheo singing; creating new melodies on the background of traditional language... To date, these are still the guiding principles in training, staging and composing music for professional Cheo plays. music theory researcher Nguyen Quang Long affirmed.
During many years of working at the Vietnam Cheo Theater, People's Artist Thuy Ngan shared that during her 40 years of performing the role of Suy Van, the music of the play Suy Van was so good that every time she performed, just listening to the music that had just rang out, she was already acted upon by the thorns. She understands each line, touching the musical nuance of each excerpt.
Meanwhile, People's Artist Thanh Ngoan said that when she was young, when she entered the Vietnam Cheo Theater, when she first approached the play Quy Van - she mistakenly thought it was an ancient Cheo play. She believes that the musical application of musician Hoang Kieu is so smooth, harmonious to every detail, that the audience and actors can feel like they are living in a truly traditional Cheo space.
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the People's Artist's birth, musician Hoang Kieu and his daughter - musician Giang Son - choked up and trembled when talking about their father. Musician Giang Son confided: Learning more about Kieus fathers career, I admire him even more because he is a master of the song of Cheo in particular and traditional Northern art in general.
