Moon So Ri, a highly appreciated actress, film director and veteran screenwriter, recently discussed the downward trend of the Korean film industry and how it has become unsustainable even for celebrities who have been in the profession for decades like her.
Moon Si Ri's latest project, Netflix's drama "When Life Gives You Tangerines," is bringing her significant attention globally. Before that, Moon So Ri had an acting career spanning more than 25 years, with many outstanding projects such as Queenamaker, Hellbound, Little Forest, Seoul Vibe...
In a recent interview with Newsen, the 1974-born actress was asked about becoming a regular face in Netflix projects.
Moon So Ri admitted that she is happy to continue appearing in such projects, mainly because making a living in the traditional Korean film industry is becoming increasingly difficult.
Moon So Ri pointed out that the number of films produced in the Korean film industry has decreased significantly, affecting the livelihoods of actors like her.
"Not many films are produced. The number of films has decreased significantly and is now mainly summer and winter blockbusters or extremely low-budget independent films. If it weren't for Netflix, I would probably worry about making a living, the 50-year-old actress confessed.
Moon So Ri even expressed her gratitude to online platforms for helping her continue her career. The actress also emphasized the need to adapt to changes over time, something she has continuously done since her debut in 1998.
She shared: "The world has changed. When I first started acting, films were filmed with plastic films and there was no complex theater system. The digital transition and the disappearance of single-screen cinemas are major changes.
And then online (OTT) platforms appeared. I feel lucky to have kept up with these changes. I hope to continue to be an actress who adapts to the changing times.
