Korean media outlet Sports Kyunghyang has held the annual “Sanddalki Awards” since 2017, similar to America’s “Golden Raspberry Awards,” highlighting the worst works and actors in Korean cinema.
The 8th Sanddalki Awards recently announced the results with 3 categories: worst film, worst actor and worst behaved actor.
51 film and entertainment reporters from leading Korean media agencies participated in the vote.
The worst actor of the year category attracted attention with many famous faces.
Actor Kang Dong Won was voted worst actor with 11 votes, for his role in the movie “The Plot”.
He was criticized as the main reason for the film's failure, as the panel members judged him as an unqualified actor despite having 21 years in the industry.
Those who chose him as the worst actor of the year pointed out his limitations in expressing emotions: “Consistent acting skills without any emotional outbursts”, “Acting skills without development, the biggest responsibility for the failure of the film”, “Sometimes it seems like he is doing well, then he seems confused”, “He is a 21-year veteran actor but still confuses the audience”, “His acting has proven that box office failure is not just a matter of product quality”, “I don't know if he is still competitive as an actor, he is not “quality” enough and is getting older”...
After Kang Dong Won’s 11 votes, 10 members of the council voted for the option of “no worst actor of the year”. Many opinions said that due to the difficult situation of cinema during the pandemic, few new works were released. Instead of criticizing the actors, the release of new works was encouraged.
Actor Ju Ji Hoon ranked 3rd, voted by 8 judges, for his performance in the movie “Project Silence”. Some notable comments about Ju Ji Hoon include: “Ju Ji Hoon’s acting was so bad that I wanted to run away from the cinema”, “He created holes in the work by overacting”…
With 7 votes each, Song Joong Ki and Song Seung Hun tied for 4th place.
Song Joong Ki’s role in “My Name Is Loh Kiwan” was criticized for trying to speak in a North Korean Yanbian accent and acting too tragically. Meanwhile, Song Seung Hun’s role in “Hidden Face” was criticized for his bland acting and lack of emotional depth.
