“Squid Game” revolves around a mysterious survival game with a prize of 45.6 billion won ($31.3 million).
Part 2 continues the story of Seong Gi Hun (Lee Jung Jae) - who gave up going to America to pursue his own goals related to the deadly game he won in part 1.
Before its official broadcast on December 26, “Squid Game 2” was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Television Series – a rare award for a film that has not yet been released.
The reason the movie received attention is because there are many mysteries that viewers want to be answered.
The life of the male lead
In the first part, Gi Hun's journey begins as a portrait of despair after divorce and drowning in gambling debt.
Afterwards, despite winning the games and claiming a huge cash prize, Gi Hun's victory is not worth celebrating. Instead, he focuses on confronting the mysterious figures who are staging the deadly competition.
In part 2, many questions are raised regarding Gi Hun's personal life, in which his broken relationships and lingering guilt are said to shape his actions in the game.
Deadly survival games
In part 1, the film brings a strange blend of childhood nostalgia and brutal survivalism through traditional Korean games such as: Paper Smash, Red Light, Green Light, Candy Splitting, Tug of War, Marbles, Glass Bridge, and Squid.
According to director Hwang Dong Hyuk, in part 2, the stakes and challenges will be more creative and intense. This was also introduced by the film producer, with the appearance of a new location and a swing game, promising to test the limits of the participants.
Voting system
In part 1, there was a rule that allowed the players to end the game if the majority agreed. Initially, the players voted to leave after witnessing the carnage of the first game, but were later driven to do so by the despair of life outside the arena.
According to the director, the voting system will play an important role in part 2. However, details about how this system develops, or how it affects the plot, have not been revealed.
Frontman and his brother's relationship
At the end of Part 1, the mysterious Frontman (Lee Byung Hun) - the supervisor of the survival games is the brother of Jun Ho (Wi Ha Joon) - a determined police officer who infiltrated the games to discover their secrets. However, at the end of the film, Jun Ho was shot down a cliff by Frontman.
In part 2, Jun Ho's return and confrontation with his brother are of interest as this is the plot that sets the stage for delving into the young police officer's family relationships, as well as how he carries out justice, uncovering the dark forces behind deadly survival games. To do this, most predict that Jun Ho will most likely cooperate with Gi Hun.
