On November 15, Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) informed that during the implementation of component project 3 - Long Thanh International Airport Construction Investment Project Phase 1 (Long Thanh Airport), ACV has saved nearly 4,000 billion VND. This includes savings from contingency costs and especially savings in bidding.
ACV believes that this savings source of ACV contributes significantly to the investment in the second runway at Long Thanh airport phase 1. The investment cost of the second runway is fully balanced in the total investment of component project 3.
"Thus, investment costs do not increase but the airport's capacity and operational efficiency increase, thereby improving the project's investment efficiency," said ACV.
According to ACV, investing in additional runways at Long Thanh airport in phase 1 will meet operational needs when one runway has problems.
In case the first runway of Long Thanh airport has a problem, flights will have to be transferred to Tan Son Nhat.
At that time, Tan Son Nhat airport will be overloaded, aircraft will have to wait in the air, causing additional costs and affecting the environment. Therefore, the immediate construction of a second runway will meet the needs of exploiting phase 1 of Long Thanh airport when runway 1 has an accident, without having to switch to Tan Son Nhat airport, and at the same time provide good support for Tan Son Nhat airport in case of an accident.
According to the plan, Tan Son Nhat International Airport can serve about 50 million passengers/year. In 2023, Tan Son Nhat's operating output reached over 41 million passengers. It is expected that by 2030, the total air transport demand of Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring provinces will be about 71 million passengers/year.
According to ACV, investing in an additional runway at Long Thanh airport phase 1 also ensures continuous operation, without interrupting the operation of Long Thanh airport... with the first runway; at the same time, avoiding the impact of dust generated during construction.
Previously, on November 12, the National Assembly heard the submission and report on the review of the adjustment of the investment policy for the Long Thanh airport project in Resolution No. 94/2015/QH13 of the National Assembly. In which, there was a proposal to invest in the construction of an additional runway in phase 1 of the Long Thanh airport project (adjusting the construction phase of runway No. 3 from phase 3 to phase 1).
