On the afternoon of September 12, in the My Thuy beach area, My Thuy village, My Thuy commune (Quang Tri province), sea waves continuously hit the shore strongly. Seawater deeply eroded the sand layer below, causing many sections of coastal concrete roads to crack and subside.
In some locations, the edge of the shore is eroded by waves into high walls nearly 2m high. Large concrete slabs are knocked out, lying precariously close to the water's edge. The lighting system along the beach is also broken and damaged.
Notably, this is only the time when the tropical depression begins to affect, but erosion has occurred on a large scale.
Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Le Dac Trieu - Vice Chairman of My Thuy Commune People's Committee said that the phenomenon of large waves began to appear from September 11 and increased sharply from noon on September 12.
According to Mr. Trieu, waves in the My Thuy beach area are about 2.5m high, continuously hitting the shore.
“From yesterday until now, waves have encroached on the shore on average about 6-7m, with some sections nearly 10m. Concrete roads, some infrastructure at the beach and lighting systems have been broken down,” Mr. Trieu said.
The affected area is located near about 12 tents and shops of people. Many sections of concrete roads were hollowed out by waves, making access to the area difficult.
Faced with the risk of waves continuing to encroach, on the morning of September 12, My Thuy Commune People's Committee issued a document mobilizing forces to urgently support people to remove property from dangerous areas.
On September 12, nearly 100 people including the My Thuy Border Guard Station force, the Military Command of the commune, the Commune Police, local officials and people of My Thuy village were mobilized.
Under heavy rain and strong waves, forces focused on pulling boats and ships inside, transporting fishing gear and people's property to safe places.
By the afternoon of September 12, about 46 boats and fishing gear had been moved out of the eroded area.
“Boats and boats still in dangerous areas are being supported by forces to bring them inside. We prioritize ensuring safety for people and property before weather developments,” Mr. Trieu said.
My Thuy Commune People's Committee also assigned a specialized unit to cut off electricity in the coastal area in advance and recall equipment belonging to the affected lighting system, avoiding the risk of unsafety.
According to local authorities, what is worrying is that the tropical depression has just begun to impact, but the waves have caused deep erosion, destroying many coastal items. If large waves continue to be maintained or increase in the coming days, the landslide range is at risk of expanding, directly threatening the remaining works and assets near the shore.
Therefore, My Thuy commune is continuing to deploy forces to monitor developments at the beach, warning people not to approach locations that have been deeply dug, and at the same time ready to continue to relocate assets if the situation worsens.
