The current state of the eroded area is about 50m deep and 500m long, stretching from the Cu De River mouth to the Hai Van Cement Factory. According to many residents, every year during the rainy season, the coastal area adjacent to the Cu De River mouth experiences this situation, but it has never been as serious as this year.
Ms. Ngo Thi Hai - Owner of a seafood restaurant right on the beach said: “In previous years, the beach here was very beautiful. Although during the rainy season, the sea water encroached deep into the shore, it was not as complicated as it is now. Recently, strong waves and deep sea water intrusion caused serious erosion, making it impossible for us to do business as well as before.”
People believe that one of the reasons leading to the above situation is that the Nam O Ecological Park and Ghenh Square Project, when implementing the construction of the breakwater, caused the sea level to rise and cause erosion.
According to Mr. Nguyen Duc Bong - a resident of Hoa Hiep Bac ward: "The cause of the erosion that stretched hundreds of meters at the mouth of the Cu De river was the construction of items of the Nam O Rapids Ecological Park and Square Project. The construction not only affected business activities but also many works and items serving tourism were washed away by the waves."
The report from the People's Committee of Hoa Hiep Bac Ward to the People's Committee of Lien Chieu District shows that Trung Thuy Joint Stock Company is constructing items of the Ecological Park and the Nam O Rapid Square. At the northern location of the Cu De River basin (the river mouth flowing into the sea), a breakwater is being built.
The construction process has a major impact on the natural ecosystem in this area, and also affects the sea dike in Hoa Hiep Bac ward (from Hai Van Cement Factory to Nam O bridge). The ward People's Committee has inspected and sent 2 reports to Lien Chieu District People's Committee on this issue, but so far the above situation has not been resolved.
Recently, the People's Committee of Hoa Hiep Bac Ward continued to report to propose the People's Committee of the District and specialized departments of Lien Chieu District to organize inspections, surveys and have plans to adjust and overcome to limit the impact on infrastructure and the environment during the construction of the project on the ward.
Previously, the construction of the breakwater of the above project was also forced to be temporarily suspended for inspection because it was built close to the foot of the Nam O railway bridge, violating railway safety.
