Quang Ngai coast continues to erode, more than 400 households affected

Quang Ngai - Sea waves erode, causing a nearly 200m long coastline in Long Phung commune to erode, encroaching 20-40m deep into the mainland.

Coastal erosion, people worry about losing livelihoods

The recent tropical depression has caused strong erosion, causing landslides of nearly 200m of coastline in Duc Loi village, Long Phung commune, encroaching 20-40m deep into the mainland.

According to reporters' records on September 15, a very large amount of sand was swept away by waves, causing serious erosion of the beach along the Trung Duong - Duc Loi Border Guard Station route. The coastline is eroded, creating a large slope, causing local fishermen to fall into a "restless" situation because bringing basket boats to sea for fishing is difficult and dangerous.

Ms. Truong Thi Lum, in Duc Loi village, shared: "These past few days, it's been raining and windy, and the sea waves are too big, so I can't fish. The coastline is eroded so deeply, bringing basket boats into the sea is even more difficult.

According to Long Phung Commune People's Committee, this area is originally a "hot spot" for landslides. Typhoon No. 13 in 2025 once caused serious coastal erosion and damaged Trung Duong road. Although the locality has reported and proposed functional departments and branches of the province to support remediation, due to lack of investment resources, the recent high tide caused by the tropical depression continues to cause large landslides.

The old landslide location continues to expand, the landslide wall is now only a few dozen meters away from the protection forest and the coastal concrete road. High risk of affecting this traffic route if not handled urgently.

Landslides are directly affecting the lives of more than 400 households living along Duc Loi beach and Trung Duong Service Area.

Mr. Nguyen Hong Loi, residing in Duc Loi village, said: "Every year, it is not until October or November of the lunar calendar, when there are big storms, big waves erode. But this year, at the beginning of August of the lunar calendar, the sea has eroded deeper than this. From now until the peak of the rainy and storm season, we don't know how much more erosion will encroach on us.

Sharing the same feeling, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh confided that coastal people are most afraid that their houses will be swept away by waves, they will have no place to live, and basket boats and fishing gear will be damaged by waves. Therefore, everyone here is worried about the tide intrusion on the coast.

Proposal to build embankments to prevent landslides

Faced with the complicated situation of erosion and landslides, Long Phung commune urgently inspected the site. The locality has placed temporary warning signs to ensure traffic safety and protect people's lives.

Mr. Dinh Anh Van - Head of Duc Loi village said that the current landslide situation has a very heavy impact on the lives, property and economy of the people. The biggest desire of the Party Committee, village committee and people at this time is for all levels and sectors to soon consider and allocate funds to build solid landslide prevention embankments.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Dang Tran Huan, Deputy Director of Quang Ngai Department of Agriculture and Environment, said that through the 2026 review, the whole province currently records 9 coastal erosion areas at dangerous and especially dangerous levels, with a total length of more than 23km.

According to Mr. Huan, landslides often develop strongly after storms, floods and high tides, causing erosion of the shoreline, lowering the beach, in some places penetrating deep into the mainland, directly affecting residential areas, transportation and coastal infrastructure.

Localities should review households and projects that are threatened to proactively evacuate and relocate when necessary; and temporarily handle particularly dangerous locations. In the long term, embankments will be built to prevent landslides, helping people settle down and develop the economy," Mr. Huan said.
