Focus on protesting the polluting pig farm
For about the past 10 days, people in Long Tien village, Cam Long commune, Cam Thuy district have continuously gathered to protest the pig farm of Mr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh's household (located in the commune) for causing serious environmental pollution for many years. Recently, the level of pollution has become increasingly serious.
According to the people, this pig farm raises thousands of pigs and sows, regularly discharging waste directly into the environment. As a result, fish at Tra Boi dam (in Long Tien village) died en masse. Not only does it pollute the living, people report that the farm also affects the cemetery area of the village. When burying some graves near the farm, people discovered black water, smelling under the graves and suspected that it was wastewater flowing from the farm.
"This camp discharges waste many times. We have reported, the authorities also intervened, the farm owner promised to fix it, but it still happened again. Too upset because of the prolonged pollution, people had to gather to protest, hoping that the authorities would handle it completely" - a resident in Cam Long commune said.
Similarly, in Tan Phuc commune, Lang Chanh district, the pig farm of Agri-Vina Agricultural Investment Joint Stock Company was also opposed by people for causing a foul smell after raising the herd and being allowed to operate again.
People in Oi Quarter - Lang Chanh Town - said that in early 2024, Agri-Vina Company will put pigs into experimental farming. After a short time, this farm spread a strong stench, causing people to react strongly. In July 2024, the People's Committee of Thanh Hoa province suspended the farm to fix the problem.
However, by the end of May 2025, the farm was allowed to operate again according to the designed capacity. After that, people and authorities continued to discover repeated pollution, affecting thousands of households in Tan Phuc commune and Lang Chanh town.
Functional sectors get involved
After receiving the feedback, the functional agencies of Thanh Hoa province and local authorities conducted a field inspection.
In Cam Long commune, Cam Thuy district, the authorities recorded that the pond adjacent to Tra Boi dam, near the pig farm, was black and had a strong stench. The water hole near the dam is about 5m wide, 70m long, and about 350m2 in serious pollution.
The authorities also discovered a wastewater pipeline from the farm flowing straight into Tra Boi dam. Working with the authorities, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh - the farm owner - admitted to the violation and apologized to the people of Long Tien village. The farm owner also committed to fixing the problem, repairing the biogas tunnel, lining the tank and collecting and treating all the wastewater generated.
Regarding Agri-Vina Company's farm, immediately after receiving feedback from the people, Lang Chanh District People's Committee worked with the company. The company explained that the cause of pollution was due to a power outage and a broken waste treatment pipe. After that, the district issued a document requesting the company to coordinate with the Department of Agriculture and Environment and communes and towns to inspect and thoroughly handle. At the same time, localities are assigned to supervise the repair work, if re-pollusion is detected, they will report to superiors for further handling.
