According to Quang Ninh Electricity Company, the E173, 174 T500 Quang Ninh line managed and operated by Quang Ninh Electricity Company is responsible for supplying electricity to people in the Hon Gai area - where important loads of the province and coal companies (Ha Lam, Nui Beo, Ha Tu, Hon Gai) are located.
After 38 years of operation, the line has now degraded significantly, often carrying a load of over 90% of the line's allowable capacity and at times the line is overloaded.
During operation, the two lines had a number of incidents that required separation for repair, causing widespread power outages in the Hon Gai area, affecting people's lives, business production, and the operations of local authorities as well as national security and defense.
Previously, in order to provide safe, continuous and reliable electricity to the Hon Gai area (Ha Long City), especially safe electricity supply during the summer, rainy and stormy season, and hot weather in 2024, from March 2024 to January 2025, Quang Ninh Electricity Company implemented the Project to renovate and upgrade the 100kV 173, 174 T500 Quang Ninh - Giap Khau - Ha Tu - Ha Lam lines from phase 1 to phase 4.
During these stages, the Northern Power Corporation replaced all AC120mm2 conductors of lines 173, 174 T500 Quang Ninh and lines 173, 174 T500 Quang Ninh branch of 110kV Ha Tu, Ha Lam stations with superheated conductors.
To ensure safe power supply during the stormy and hot season of 2025, the Company continues to implement phase 5 of the project by replacing all AC185mm2 conductors on the main trunk line of line 173 T500 Quang Ninh with superheated conductors. Phase 5 is expected to be implemented from February 19, 2025 to February 28, 2025.
When cutting off power to line 173 T500 for construction, all three 110kV transformer stations, namely 110kV Giap Khau, Ha Tu, Ha Lam substations supplying power to wards Ha Khanh, Ha Lam, Cao Xanh, Cao Thang, Bach Dang, Tran Hung Dao, Hong Gai, Ha Phong, Ha Tu, Ha Trung, Hong Ha, Hong Hai (Hon Gai area) were only supplied from line 174 T500 Quang Ninh (wire cross-section 185mm2).
Thus, to ensure the operation of line 174 T500 supplying electricity to loads in the Hon Gai area during the power outage for construction of line 173 T500, from February 19, 2025 to February 28, 2025, it will be necessary to reduce the load in rotation during the evening peak period from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a reduced capacity of 10-20MW.
The reduced capacity may change depending on weather conditions and load demand. Quang Ninh Electricity Company will notify customers in detail about power outages and reduced capacity usage according to regulations.
According to calculations, after completing phase 5 of the renovation, line 173 T500 will ensure power supply for loads and will not have to reduce capacity during peak hours. After completing phase 5, Quang Ninh Electricity Company will continue to implement phase 6 of the project, expected to be from March 3 to March 14, 2025.
