Kien Giang - This is an opportunity and premise for Phu Quoc City to continue to develop comprehensively, commensurate with its special economic position.

On January 21, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha signed Decision 199/QD-TTg recognizing Phu Quoc City as a class I urban area under Kien Giang province.

The scope of urban recognition includes the entire administrative boundary of the existing Phu Quoc City. In particular, the inner city area is expected to include the entire administrative boundary of the 2 wards of An Thoi, Duong Dong and 6 communes: Ham Ninh, Duong To, Ganh Dau, Cua Can, Cua Duong, Bai Thom. The suburban area includes the entire administrative boundary of Tho Chau commune.

According to the People's Committee of Kien Giang province, Phu Quoc city was classified as a type 2 urban area in 2014. After 10 years of being recognized as a type 2 urban area, the Party Committee, government and people in the province have always made efforts to build, develop and strive to achieve a type 1 urban area in the period of 2021 - 2025. The city has focused investment resources to ensure 5 criteria and 63 standards according to the regulations of the National Assembly Standing Committee on urban classification.

Previously, at the 26th session of the People's Council of Kien Giang province, term X, Chairman of Phu Quoc City People's Committee Tran Minh Khoa said that Phu Quoc City, under Kien Giang province, is the largest island in Vietnam, and also the largest island in the archipelago in the region, located in the Gulf of Thailand. Phu Quoc is planned to be a large, modern, high-quality, national-level tourism, resort, and international trade center in the region and the world, serving as a driving force to promote tourism development nationwide, making tourism a key economic sector associated with ensuring national security and defense.

In recent years, Kien Giang province in general and Phu Quoc city in particular have implemented breakthrough and flexible measures, suitable to the socio-economic development conditions of the locality. Mobilizing resources from organizations and individuals of all economic sectors at home and abroad to invest in developing tourism products that are highly competitive with countries in the region and the world, demonstrating the brand of Phu Quoc.

The city has mobilized capital to build urban and rural infrastructure. Many projects have been completed and put into use, creating an increasingly prosperous urban appearance. Up to now, Phu Quoc City has basically met all the conditions of a first-class urban area under the province. This is the will and aspiration of the Party Committee, government and people of Phu Quoc City and has been concretized in the Resolution of the Congress of Delegates of the Kien Giang Provincial Party Committee as well as Phu Quoc City for the 2020-2025 term.
