80-year-old symbol in Hai Phong
On December 25, social networks were abuzz with news about the demolition of a flower shop in the center of Hai Phong City - a building considered one of the city's symbols.
According to the Hong Bang District Electronic Information Portal, the flower shop in the center of Hai Phong City was built by the French around August 1944. Director Luyxiani was the person in charge of the design and the main road Gochie was assigned to be in charge of the art design for the flower shop.
This area has 5 flower shops, each shop has an area of nearly 20m2, about 4m high, the distance between shops is 6m, spread over an area of 300m2.
The flower shop has the traditional beauty of Vietnam in the form of an ancient square pavilion. The pillars are made of rare ironwood, which is termite-proof; the roof is covered with dragon-scale tiles. Existing for 8 decades, this structure still retains its original beauty, intact, without any damage.
According to the elders, after the inauguration of the flower shop, at each flower shop, there were usually 2 women wearing modern ao dai standing selling fresh flowers to everyone. Up to now, all 5 flower shops are still operating, trading bustlingly. 8 business households signed contracts with the district to do business, trading flowers in this area.
However, for many days now, this area has no longer had any businesses or traders, and the kiosks have also been cleaned up. According to Lao Dong reporters on the morning of December 26, the flower shop area is airy. Some businesses are still present near this area to receive orders. Mr. Nguyen Van Liem (65 years old, resident of Hong Bang district) - said: "Every morning I walk along the central strip, past the flower shop, so when I heard that the flower shop had stopped operating, I felt quite regretful. Although in reality, recently, businesses selling flowers were still messy."
Uncle informed about the demolition of the iconic building
A representative of the Hong Bang District Project Management Board (the unit in charge of the central strip area) said that from December 2024, there will be no demolition of the flower shop, but the unit will only terminate the contract with the flower businesses to serve the renovation and beautification of this area.
Along with terminating the contracts with households at the flower shop to serve the renovation, in the face of the situation of electric cars and toy cars causing disorder in the central area, the district also moved some households to operate at the end of Quang Trung walking street. In the immediate future, 2 households will be piloted to operate at Quang Trung walking street to review the effectiveness as well as listen to feedback from the people.
From December 15, Hong Bang district also launched a campaign to ensure traffic safety and order, sidewalk order, environmental sanitation, civilized urban lifestyle, creating tourist highlights and impressions for visitors and people coming to Hai Phong city during the New Year, Lunar New Year and Spring Festival 2025.
