Currently, Hanoi is experiencing a period of severe cold, to ensure that animals at the zoo are kept warm, the staff of Hanoi Zoo Company Limited always closely monitor the health status of species, while implementing cold prevention measures such as burning fire, using a heater and applying appropriate methods for each animal species.
Ms. Do Thanh Hoa, Head of Technical Department of Hanoi Zoo Company Limited, said that when the environmental temperature drops below 17°C, the zoo will activate cold prevention for all animals. This work is carried out according to a detailed plan, based on the biological characteristics, behavior and living conditions of each species.
In the cages of deer, cranes, linhins, and horses, zoo staff carry out out outdoor firewood burning measures, while ensuring the warmth of these species in the shelter.
For animals such as monkeys, storks, ponds, and reptiles, the zoo uses transparent plastic corrugated iron sheets to get light and shield against the wind, and install wooden houses as shelters so that they can avoid the cold.
The areas where fierce animals such as tigers, bears, lions are captive are protected by plastic sheets, glass and kept warm by the heating system inside.
In particular, for hippo, an animal that likes to immerse itself in water, the Zoo has equipped a large hot water boiler system to provide warm water for the lagoon, creating a warm environment for hippo during the cold season.
Animal care staff at Hanoi Zoo share that during cold days, fluctuating temperatures are favorable conditions for respiratory diseases to develop in animals. Therefore, cold prevention work is always carried out proactively, helping to protect the health and reduce diseases related to weather factors for animal species.
