Visiting his family's rose garden in Me Linh district, Hanoi, Mr. Le Van Ca (born in 1994) could only sigh in frustration because his efforts, money and sweat had been washed away by the flood waters.
This rose garden has been cared for by him and his family for many years. Until now, before this man's eyes are only dry, bare branches, waiting for the day to be cleared and thrown away.
Mr. Le Van Ca recalled that before the third storm - Yagi - swept through, he had mentally prepared for the fact that his plants would be flooded and many parts would be cut down. However, with three generations of his family growing flowers in Me Linh, Mr. Ca had never seen the land along the dike flooded to a depth of 5 meters, and in some places up to 8-9 meters.
Last night, September 9, he was restless and could not sleep because he was worried about the rose garden he had worked so hard to take care of. As soon as it was light, he used a flycam to observe the situation of the rose garden and the vegetable growing area of the villagers. At that time, there was only a vast sea of water, not a single rose tree or vegetable bed could be seen.
"All the trees are dead, none of the persimmon and vegetable trees of the people in the dike area survived this flood" - Mr. Ca regretted.
According to Mr. Ca, among the damaged rose trees, thousands of trees are worth from 200,000 to 500,000 VND/tree and about 150 trees are worth from 5-10 million VND/tree. The total damage is estimated at nearly 2 billion VND.
Not only that, in addition to losing all the roses in this area, Mr. Ca also had to face the compensation for the value of the order that the customer had placed before. To minimize the loss, he negotiated with the customer to exchange it for another type of flower with the same or higher value.
Mr. Ca said: "About 5-6 customers have ordered flowers, waiting for the delivery date. The value of each order is about tens of millions of dong. But they also sympathize with farmers during the flood season, so they agreed to exchange the plants."
It is known that Mr. Ca currently hires about 60 workers, from taking care of plants to introducing products, closing orders, selling... The consequences of the storm and flood have caused him and many other workers to fall into dire straits.
In addition to the 7,000 dead rose trees that were ready to be thrown away, Mr. Ca was lucky to have another rose garden located inside the dike, not affected by the flood. Thanks to that, he still ensured the supply to sell to the market, somewhat reducing the financial difficulties.
Anh Ca is just one of many households in Me Linh district (Hanoi) affected by the recent storm Yagi and floods.
According to the Me Linh District Economic Department, the vegetable growing area in the district mainly supplies the capital. However, due to the impact of storm No. 3 and rain, about 450 hectares of vegetables have been damaged. This may cause the price of green vegetables in the locality to increase in the coming days.
Storm No. 3 combined with rapidly rising river water also caused the loss of nearly 200 hectares of bananas of people in communes along the Red River in Me Linh and Dan Phuong districts.
