The recombined African swine fever virus strain puts more pressure on epidemic control

Quang Ngai has a recombined African swine fever virus strain between genotypes I and II with a rapid disease-causing rate, reducing the effectiveness of vaccines.

Faced with the increasingly complex developments of epidemics on livestock, especially African swine fever, on August 6, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Ngai province organized a conference to deploy animal disease prevention and control solutions with the participation of representatives of 38 communes and wards in the eastern region of the province.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Ngai province, from the beginning of 2026 to now, African swine fever has occurred in 243 livestock households in 86 villages of 34 communes and wards, causing 1,611 pigs to get sick, die and be forced to be destroyed with a total volume of more than 96.6 tons.

From the beginning of July to August 4, the epidemic broke out strongly in 178 households in 19 communes and wards, causing 1,076 pigs to be destroyed, with a total volume of more than 59.2 tons. The outbreaks mainly appeared in small-scale livestock households, not meeting biosafety requirements.

The specialized sector assessed that the risk of disease spread is still high due to the remaining pathogens in the environment; the demand for restocking to serve the year-end market has caused the total pig herd to increase rapidly; animal transportation, slaughtering and trading activities are bustling.

Notably, the emergence of the recombinant African swine fever virus strain between genotypes I and II (rASFV I/II) with high virulence, rapid disease-causing speed and the ability to reduce the effectiveness of existing vaccines is causing more difficulties for epidemic control.

To proactively control the epidemic, the Provincial Sub-Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine has distributed hundreds of thousands of doses of vaccines of all kinds to localities, and at the same time distributed 13,500 liters of chemicals to serve general sanitation, disinfection, and environmental detoxification.
