On the afternoon of November 4, Mr. Lai Thanh An - Head of the Irrigation Sub-Department, Chief of Office of the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue of Bac Lieu province - said that the rainfall on November 2 mainly occurred in Bac Lieu city. Through the review of Bac Lieu city, about 71 hectares of rice in the seedling stage, more than 1.8 hectares of vegetables and 0.6 hectares of aquaculture were flooded.
"The authorities are coordinating with localities to survey and calculate the extent of damage to find solutions; and to mobilize people to reinforce embankments to proactively prevent flooding...", said Mr. An.
The rain on November 2nd has surpassed a historical milestone in Bac Lieu. At the automatic rain gauge station in Ward 8, Bac Lieu City, it was 221.4 mm, surpassing the historical milestone of the highest daily rainfall recorded in over 40 years in Bac Lieu province (the highest daily rainfall from 1980 to present was 203.7 mm on December 13, 1994).
Mr. Huynh Minh Nhan - Director of Bac Lieu Regional Hydrological Station - forecasts that from now until the end of 2024, due to the impact of climate change, extreme hydrological weather phenomena are always at risk of occurring. However, whether there will be more or less rain than the rain on November 2 depends on many specific actual conditions.
Mr. Nhan warned people to proactively monitor weather and hydrological information, especially forecasts and warnings about dangerous weather and hydrological conditions, and recommendations from relevant agencies. When there is a high tide or heavy rain warning, people need to proactively monitor, raise furniture to avoid flooding, and follow the seasonal production schedule.
