On November 6, the Irrigation Investment and Construction Management Board 10 (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) held a handover ceremony to put into use the Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate project. This is the second largest saltwater barrier sluice gate in the West, after the Cai Lon - Cai Be sluice gate in Kien Giang province.
Mr. Kieu Van Cong - Deputy Director of the Irrigation Investment and Construction Management Board 10 - said that Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate construction started on November 11, 2022, with a total capital of 518 billion VND. Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate has been effective since the beginning of the 2023 - 2024 dry season and saved tens of billions of VND per year in dam construction costs for Tien Giang province.
"Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate is built about 420m from Kenh Xang bridge towards Tien river. The total investment of component project 1: Nguyen Tan Thanh canal water source control project belongs to the project of Nguyen Tan Thanh canal water source control project and the right bank of Vam Co Tay river with a total investment of more than 518 billion VND, of which, construction and equipment costs are more than 407 billion VND. The project started on November 11, 2022. The construction and completion time and official commissioning is 24 months (November 2024)" - Mr. Cong said.
Mr. Le Van Bay (residing in Song Thuan commune, Chau Thanh district, Tien Giang province) recalled: “I planted coconut trees with an area of nearly 3,000 m2. After the Lunar New Year 2024, saltwater attacked. At that time, although the project was not completed, the Irrigation Investment and Construction Management Board 10 (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) operated the closure of Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate. Thanks to that, it prevented saltwater intrusion, helping people in the sluice gate have a source of fresh water for production and daily life, helping people overcome the 2024 saltwater intrusion drought”.
"Every year around February or March, saltwater intrusion will attack the Tien River up to the water section of Chau Thanh district (Tien Giang province). The opening of Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate will help prevent saltwater intrusion and store fresh water to serve the production and daily life of the people in the near future. Seeing the sluice gate completed, the people here are all excited" - Mr. Bay said.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Thinh - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tien Giang province - shared that Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate is the sluice gate to prevent salinity and store fresh water with the largest sluice gate aperture (40m) and the second largest scale in the Mekong Delta region, after Cai Lon - Cai Be sluice gate. The project is invested with the goal of increasing the capacity to store fresh water, proactively control high tides, salinity intrusion, and regulate water sources for agricultural and industrial production in the area with an area of about 12,580ha of Tien Giang province. At the same time, it creates a source of raw water for domestic water supply plants in the area, serving about 800,000 people of Tien Giang province.
Together with 6 saltwater prevention sluices at the canals leading to Tien River on Provincial Road 864 that have just been completed, Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice will create a closed system of saltwater prevention, fresh water storage, and high tide prevention sluices, protecting production and people's lives.
