On July 24, Nam Dan Medical Center said that the unit had just received and rescued patients in a suspected food poisoning case that occurred in the area.
According to initial information, the incident happened on July 12. Before the abnormal symptoms appeared, 4 members of the same family ate a potato soup, in which some tubers had sprouted.
After eating, all 4 people showed symptoms of abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting.
Among these, a 69-year-old woman had the most severe developments. Family members said that the old woman ate more potatoes than the remaining members and had a history of cardiovascular disease.
When taken to Nam Dan Medical Center, the patient was in a state of severe abdominal pain, severe vomiting and circulatory collapse.
Doctors urgently resuscitated and transferred the patient to a higher-level hospital for further treatment. However, despite actively being treated, the old woman died.
The other three people had milder symptoms. The mother was monitored and treated at the commune health station; the two children were transferred to Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital. Currently, the health of all 3 people has stabilized.
According to Nam Dan Medical Center, up to now, functional agencies have not had an official conclusion on the cause of suspected poisoning symptoms as well as the cause of death of the patient.
However, through medical history exploitation, before abnormal symptoms appeared, the whole family used a soup cooked from potatoes with some sprouted tubers.
Nam Dan Health Center recommends that people do not use potatoes that have sprouted, have many sprouting eyes or the skin turns green; do not just cut off the sprouts and continue processing.
Potatoes need to be stored in a dry, cool, ventilated place, avoiding direct sunlight. People should only use fresh, firm tubers that are not crushed and show no signs of spoilage.
