Hanoi - The city's Food Safety and Hygiene Department requested Cau Giay District to verify the origin of the 40m long cigarette butts that caused a stir in the area.

On May 7, the Hanoi City Food Safety Interdisciplinary Inspection Team No. 1 suddenly inspected the collective kitchen of Nghia Tan Primary School (No. 16, To Hieu Ward, Nghia Tan, Cau Giay, Hanoi) on the occasion of the Food Safety Action Month 2025.

At the time of inspection, Nghia Tan Primary School had presented a food supply contract between the school and the service provider (providing more than 3,000 meals/day).

The school has also provided a full commitment to ensure food safety; legal documents of the catering unit at the school. Through inspection, the actual hygiene conditions of the school were met.

The report of the Cau Giay District Food Safety Steering Committee said that there are 3,272 food production and trading establishments in the whole district. Implementing the Roadmap for Food Safety in 2025, Cau Giay District established 14 interdisciplinary inspection teams, including 6 district-level teams; 8 ward-level teams. The inspection teams of the district and ward inspected 278 establishments and fined 11 establishments with a total amount of 53.5 million VND.

Referring to the management, inspection and handling of food safety violations, Deputy Head of the Hanoi Food Safety and Hygiene Department Nguyen Quang Trung requested Cau Giay District to regularly upgrade and improve the quality of inspection and handling of violations of food and nutrition product businesses. Authorities need to strengthen inspection and strictly handle violations of food product quality and origin.

In particular, in food safety inspection, the district needs to have close coordination between authorities at all levels and management agencies to ensure the effectiveness of inspection and handling of violations...

Regarding the information that the 40m long feeding section of the fruit tree is a hot issue that has been of public interest and shared in recent days, Mr. Nguyen Quang Trung suggested that Cau Giay District proactively coordinate with authorities in the district to verify the incident; check and monitor the origin of this food item.

Recently, a video from October 2024 was shared again, recording a scene of a restaurant owner in Hanoi showing off a 40m long, 5.8kg cigarette set, believed to be taken from a pig weighing more than 100kg.

The image of restaurant staff lining up to measure the length of the heart on Tran Thai Tong street (Cau Giay district) makes many people doubt the authenticity - fakeness and origin of the dish.

On May 6, in the hallway of the National Assembly, National Assembly delegate Pham Khanh Phong Lan - Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety (Ho Chi Minh City National Assembly Delegation) answered the press about the incident of cigarette butts being sold a lot on the market that is causing a stir in public opinion.

According to the female delegate, this could be a commercial scam to increase profits, and cigarette butts are very rare and difficult to find in the market.

The Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety said that this agency is conducting an origin tracing test, taking samples to test whether additives have been detected or not.

"Really, up to now, this issue (cigarette vehicles) has not received much attention, the Department mainly focuses on pork," said the delegate.
