The Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong railway line through 5 wards and 15 communes of Phu Tho province (after the merger) is 99.1km long; the starting point of the route is in Dan Thuong commune, the end point is in the province in Phuc Yen ward. There are 7 stations on the route. The total land area is about 630.56ha; the total resettlement household is about 1,813 households. The total estimated cost of compensation, support and resettlement is VND 12,363.2 billion.
As a result of initial implementation, Phu Tho has established and completed the Provincial Steering Committee for Site Clearance, assigned investors and issued a site clearance plan and many documents to direct, remove obstacles in resettlement, adjust route directions, and assess environmental impacts.
According to the proposal of the Railway Project Management Board, it is expected to select a starting point at the new Phu Tho Station in Phong Chau Ward on December 19, 2025. This is a mixed-use station with a passenger and cargo operation in Phong Chau ward, with an area of about 32 hectares.
To ensure the project implementation progress, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Phan Trong Tan suggested that departments, branches and localities continue to closely follow the tasks, proactively coordinate closely with the Railway Project Management Board to promptly remove difficulties in compensation, support and resettlement.

The Vice Chairman of Phu Tho Provincial People's Committee requested the Project Management Boards to immediately start completing documents, submitting for approval sub-projects, and speeding up the approval of component projects. The Department of Construction grasps the actual situation, promptly synthesizes difficulties and problems to report to the Provincial People's Committee for direction to resolve them.
Along with that, specialized agencies need to urgently review the site and land fund, and fully prepare conditions to meet the construction schedule on December 19, 2025.
The Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong railway line has a total preliminary investment of VND203,231 billion, equivalent to USD8.37 billion. The National Assembly has approved this plan under Resolution 187/2025/QH15 with the goal of starting construction in December 2025 and completing it by 2030 at the latest.
The railway line is nearly 391km long, starting at the rail connection point across the border (Lao Cai province), ending at Lach Huyen station (Hai Phong), nearly 391km long; branch line length 27.9km, passing through the provinces: Lao Cai, Phu Tho, Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Hung Yen, and Hai Phong.
The railway line is invested in a new single track, 1,435m wide, transporting passengers and goods together; designed speed of 160km/h with the main line from the new Lao Cai station to Nam Hai Phong station; designed speed of 120km/h with the section passing through the Hanoi city hub; speed of 80km/h with the remaining sections.
