Late arrivals and punctuality

Văn Nhân |

The story of dozens of parents of Nguyen Khuyen High School in Ho Chi Minh City arriving late for the beginning-of-year meeting and not being allowed to enter the school has created much debate. The school then apologized and said that closing the gate was to ensure that the meeting took place seriously; while many opinions said that parents also need to learn from the time frame.

Looking broader at a specific event, this is a story worth considering about punctuality in social life.

Many people consider being late a very... normal thing. Friends make appointments, arrive at exactly 7 pm to start the fun. At 7 pm, they don't see you coming, call, and you indifferently say: "Just stay home now". So the fun has begun to ignite an uncomfortable atmosphere. Or in an office meeting, the regulation is that it starts at 8 am, then many people push the door in at exactly 8 am. When questioned, they say: "We arrived on time, right?". In fact, the meeting has been pushed back for a few minutes, even dozens of minutes.

Punctuality is not too high a requirement. But it is one of the simplest and clearest expressions of respect.

People attending the meeting need to proactively calculate the time, go earlier than necessary, and anticipate possible situations. If they cannot arrive on time, the minimum thing to do is to notify the organizer. It is not only polite but also responsible. Especially in the office environment, conferences, seminars or professional working sessions, delays can affect a whole chain of tasks behind. A late start of a meeting leads to a late next meeting; one person arrives late, causing the content to be repeated; a late decision can cause many departments to wait.

In modern society, punctuality is also a form of labor productivity. We often talk a lot about procedural reform, digital transformation, and improving work efficiency. But efficiency is not only in machines or technology but also in the very basic habits of people. An agency with a modern technology system but meetings often start late, attendees do not arrive on time, and work schedules are constantly broken, it is difficult to call it an effective working environment.

Timely culture is also a way we educate the younger generation. Children are required to come to class on time, do homework on time, and follow the schedule. But if adults continuously come late and late and consider it normal, discipline teachings will lose their persuasiveness.

Returning to the story of Nguyen Khuyen school, Ho Chi Minh City, many opinions suggest that parents should go to meetings on time not only to respect the school and others but also to set an example for their children.

Of course, building a culture of punctuality cannot only require one side. Organizers also need to be professional. If meeting hours have been stipulated, it is necessary to clearly announce and arrange plans to receive cases of late arrivals for legitimate reasons, avoiding turning discipline into rigidity.

Timely when going to meetings. Timely when meeting. Timely when working. Timely with an appointment is a message of respect, respect for work and respect for all appointments.
