Muong Pon fields will be green again
After the historic flash flood in Muong Pon border commune, Dien Bien district, the fertile fields were buried under thousands of cubic meters of earth and rocks. Up to now, the people are still working tirelessly with the forces to restore the fields in time for the winter-spring rice crop.
On November 22, Lao Dong Newspaper reporters recorded in Ban Linh field, Muong Pon commune, the sound of laughter echoed everywhere. The rice fields gradually regained their shape. New banks and fields were being dug and renovated in an atmosphere of optimism and hope.
Ms. Lo Thi Dien - Linh village, Muong Pon commune said: "The flash flood damaged my family's 6,000 m2 of rice fields, and now only 300 m2 have been restored. With the huge damage, my family will try to gradually overcome it in the coming time."
The flash flood in Muong Pon commune at the end of July buried and washed away 123 hectares of productive land. In particular, 66.5 hectares of land were buried under a thick layer of rock and soil, which the people could not overcome on their own.
At the same time, flash floods also completely damaged 3 irrigation works (Phai Den irrigation, Na O irrigation, Co Ke). Nam Pon stream had landslides on both sides and changed its entire course with a length of 10 km.
On November 22, in Muong Pon, many officers and soldiers were still present to work with the people of Muong Pon commune to rebuild the fields and dredge canals in time to sow the winter-spring crop of 2024-2025. It is expected that more than 80 hectares will be restored so that people can sow the upcoming winter-spring crop in time.
New and spacious houses
In mid-October 2024, Dien Bien Provincial Police made efforts to complete 10 new, spacious houses for people in Linh village, Muong Pon commune. Up to now, the police force continues to accompany to complete 10 more houses in 2024.
Recently, Dien Bien district coordinated with the provincial Military Command to support 25 houses for the people, including: 17 houses in Huoi Ke group, Linh village; 6 houses in Linh village; 1 house in Huoi Un village and 1 house in Huoi Chan village.
In addition, Dien Bien district is also focusing on and urgently implementing the construction of nearly ten essential infrastructure projects, of which 2 projects have been completed and 7 projects are under construction.
Along with that, a plan was proposed to arrange and stabilize the population in the disaster area in Muong Pon commune, including 4 locations for 102 households. Of which, 36 households were stabilized on site and 66 households were moved to new residences, with a total cost of more than 106 billion VND.
Ms. Cao Thi Tuyet Lan - Secretary of Dien Bien District Party Committee said that the restoration and construction of the irrigation canal system is currently facing many difficulties due to being buried by rocks and soil. To ensure the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop, the locality is coordinating with the military and people to temporarily overcome the problem.
“In the long term, Dien Bien district still needs to seek financial support from the Central Government to build stream embankments, protect production land and invest in new irrigation systems,” the Secretary of the Dien Bien District Party Committee emphasized.
Previously, as reported by Lao Dong Newspaper, the heavy rain and flash flood occurred on the night of July 24 and early morning of July 25 in Muong Pon Commune (Dien Bien District, Dien Bien Province) causing 7 deaths and missing people. The flash flood also swept away dozens of houses, many collapsed and about 100 others were damaged.
