According to information from the Center for Search and Rescue and Natural Disaster Prevention of Vinh City, at around 6:00 a.m. on May 20, a couple went swimming in the sea area of Nghi Huong Ward, Cua Lo Town and were caught in an underground whirlwind.
As soon as the emergency situation was discovered, the rescue team was on duty at the beach and immediately deployed rescue, bringing a victim to shore after 10 minutes in critical condition. However, this victim did not survive.
The remaining missing victim forced the authorities to use a fishing net to support the search. At around 8:30 a.m. the same day, the body of the second victim was found and brought ashore.
The identities of the victims have not been announced, the authorities are verifying their identities and coordinating with the family to arrange the funeral.
Cua Lo Beach Management Board said that this area has many underground flows, reefs and dangerous deep water points. The unit has placed warning signs, arranged buoys and rescue forces are on duty regularly. However, swimming in the sea early in the morning before 6am or late afternoon after 6pm - outside of rescue time - still has great potential risks.
The authorities recommend that people and tourists absolutely do not swim far from the shore, strictly follow safety regulations, do not swim in deserted areas and always have someone to supervise each group of people going to sea, especially children or the elderly.
