Attracting very large-scale power projects
Gia Lai is the second largest province in the country with more than 21,000km2, many places have average wind speeds of about 6-7 m/s. Localities such as Kong Chro, Chu Prong, Mang Yang, Van Canh, Vinh Thanh... have great potential for renewable energy.
In January 2026, the Department of Industry and Trade of Gia Lai province said that the province is inviting potential electricity project investors to increase budget revenue and develop the economy. Notably in January 2026, the People's Committee of Gia Lai province approved the results of the invitation to pay attention to 3 large-scale wind power projects, with a total estimated investment capital of 19,354 billion VND. In which, the Van Canh 1 wind power plant project located in Canh Lien commune has a land use area of about 56 ha, designed capacity of 160 MW, total investment capital of more than 6,904 billion VND. Through the evaluation of the invitation dossier, Saigon - Bac Giang Industrial Park Joint Stock Company (Bac Ninh) is the investor that fully meets the requirements according to regulations.
This investor was also approved by Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee to fully meet the requirements of the application for interest in the Van Canh 2 wind power plant project (Canh Lien and Van Canh communes, Gia Lai province). The project has a total land use area of about 62 ha, designed capacity of 180 MW, with a total investment capital of more than 7,771 billion VND.
For the Vinh Thuan wind power plant project (Vinh Quang commune, Gia Lai province), the investor that meets the application requirements is Vinenergo Energy Joint Stock Company (Hanoi). The project has a land use area of about 50ha, designed capacity of 143MW, total investment capital of 4,679 billion VND.
Series of power projects licensed to operate
Mr. Pham Anh Tuan - Chairman of Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee - affirmed that in the past time, the province has implemented and put into commercial operation many renewable energy projects. In particular, the province has proactively built a mechanism to attract investment, improve the business environment, publicize the list of projects and implement transparent bidding on the National Bidding Network System. Investment invitations are linked to the criteria of sustainable development, environmental protection, ensuring social security and local human resource development.
At the end of 2025 and January 2026, 4 large-scale power projects in Gia Lai were licensed for commercial operation, after a long period of procedural obstacles. The Mountainous Region Development and Central Highlands Processing Wind Power Plant (Dien Hong ward, Gia Lai province) confirmed that two wind power projects have officially been put into commercial operation (COD) since December 22, 2025.
Electricity Trading Company (EPTC), belonging to Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN), has issued a document agreeing on the COD time of both plants starting from December 22, 2025. According to the license issued, the Mountainous Development Wind Power Plant (managed by Chu Prong Gia Lai Wind Joint Stock Company) has a capacity of 49.5MW (15 turbines, 3.3MW each), with a total investment of 1,916 billion VND, built in Bau Can, Ia Tor and Gao communes.
The Central Highlands Processing Wind Power Plant (managed by Chu Prong Gia Lai Wind Energy Joint Stock Company) has a capacity equivalent to 49.5MW (15 turbines × 3.3MW), with a total investment of 1,917 billion VND, built in Bau Can commune. This plant will connect to a transformer station under the Mountainous Development Wind Power Plant. The license takes effect until October 20, 2045. The total investment of these two wind power plants is nearly 4,000 billion VND.
Mr. Nguyen Quang Trung - Chairman of Bau Can Commune People's Committee - said that the project going into commercial operation will contribute to increasing budget revenue, socio-economic development, creating a "wind power field" landscape to serve tourism, creating jobs and improving social security.
The fact that the entire Ia Pech and Ia Pech 2 wind power plant projects (total capacity of 99MW) have also officially gone into commercial operation, not only supplying electricity to the national system but also promoting green energy transition and increasing local budget revenue.
