Coastal wind power development in Ca Mau shows signs of slowing down

Ca Mau - After a period of hot development, wind power in the coastal area of Ca Mau province shows signs of slowing down.

Ca Mau is considered the renewable energy center of the country. This place develops a series of wind power projects stretching from the coast adjacent to Can Tho to Mui Ca Mau.

However, in 2026, this province will only focus on supporting investors to accelerate the implementation progress to bring 4 wind power plant projects with a total capacity of 340 MW to completion and put into operation, increasing the province's total wind power capacity to 994.2 MW without developing any more wind power projects.

According to the industrial sector growth scenario (area 2) of Ca Mau Provincial People's Committee, in 2026, 4 wind power plants will be completed and put into operation: Bac Lieu Wind Power Plant - phase 3, capacity 141 MW; Ca Mau 1C Wind Power Plant, capacity 88 MW; Ca Mau 1D Wind Power Plant, capacity 86 MW; Tan Thuan Wind Power Plant - phase 3, capacity 25 MW.

Mr. Nguyen Chi Thien - Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Ca Mau province - acknowledged: In 2026, it is very difficult to operate the above 4 wind power plants. The investor of Bac Lieu Wind Power Plant - phase 3 is unlikely to reach a capacity of 141 MW because the investor is waiting for connection, and then will continue to invest.

The report of the People's Committee of Ca Mau province stated: Wind power plants in Ca Mau operate almost out of capacity due to load and grid safety. To remove this difficulty, right from the beginning of the year, Ca Mau province promoted investment, upgrading, and renovation to meet the needs of load use and capacity transmission for power plants.

Accelerate the progress of putting into operation key 220 kV power grid projects such as: Nam Can 220 kV substation and Nam Can - Ca Mau 220 kV line; Hoa Binh 220 kV substation and Hoa Binh - Gia Rai - Bac Lieu 220 kV line and 110 kV line output projects from 220 kV substations to release capacity for wind power plants; ensure full and stable power supply for key projects, for production, business and people's lives in the province.

Continue to support factories in the Gas - Electricity - Fertilizer cluster to maintain stable operations; prioritize supporting investors to carry out investment procedures for the Khanh My - Dam Doi, Nam Du - U Minh, Hoa Mai gas field exploitation projects in time for operation to serve the gas supply needs for factories in the Gas - Electricity - Fertilizer cluster; promptly propose solutions to support and remove difficulties for processing and exporting enterprises for seafood and fertilizers, contributing to maintaining the stable operation of existing factories.

In 2026, Ca Mau province will coordinate with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to remove difficulties and obstacles of Ca Mau 1&2 Thermal Power Plant, Bac Lieu LNG Gas Power Plant project and Bac Lieu - Thot Not 500 kV LNG power line project.

Mr. Nguyen Chi Thien said that in 2026, the Department of Industry and Trade will make every effort to advise the Provincial People's Committee to remove difficulties in large energy projects. The potential to increase electricity production, especially wind power, for 2026 is not large.
