Forecast of widespread increased thunderstorms in Ho Chi Minh City and the South

HẠ MÂY |

According to the Southern Hydrometeorological Station, on May 24-25, many places in Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring provinces and cities will have thunderstorms.

In the afternoon of August 24, monitoring satellite cloud images, weather radar images and lightning positioning showed that convective clouds are developing in many areas of wards and communes such as Binh Tien, Tan My, Tan Hung, Phu Dinh and Nha Be communes.

In the next 3 hours, convective clouds will continue to develop, causing showers with thunderstorms and lightning in the above areas and possibly expanding to neighboring areas. Common rainfall is 5-20 mm, in some places over 30 mm. During thunderstorms, people need to be wary of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind at level 5-7 (8-17 m/s). Heavy rain can cause localized flooding.

The weather pattern causing thunderstorms is mainly due to a tropical convergence zone with its axis through the North and North Central regions, connected to storm No. 4 in the Gulf of Tonkin, combined with a moderate to strong Southwest monsoon.

On May 24-25, the weather in the South will be cloudier, with intermittent sunshine. The highest temperature is commonly 30-33 degrees Celsius; especially in the Lam Dong plateau area, it is about 27-30 degrees Celsius.

Showers and thunderstorms may appear from morning and noon in some places, then gradually expand in the late afternoon. The eastern provinces and Lam Dong have widespread showers and thunderstorms; the Mekong Delta has scattered showers and thunderstorms, with moderate to heavy rain in some places.

The area likely to experience heavy rain is concentrated in the North of Dong Nai, Tay Ninh, Ho Chi Minh City and Lam Dong. The probability of rain is commonly 40-60%, especially in the Northern East and Lam Dong regions about 70-80%.

People should proactively bring raincoats when going out, especially in the late afternoon. Rainstorms can occur during rush hour, affecting travel and traffic.
