Busy day and night
According to Lao Dong Newspaper reporters at landfill area No. 8 (in Cai Rang district, Can Tho city) - this is a landfill blocking the Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway, currently many machines, equipment and workers are mobilized at the scene to urgently relocate the landfill.
It was observed that the landfill was dug about 7 - 8m deep, but the stench was not too strong. Because the amount of garbage here has existed for more than 50 years, most of it has decomposed. During the construction process, the unit arranged temporary roads, service roads; installed temporary corrugated iron fences around the landfill to protect the construction area.
This landfill has an area of 4.3 hectares with a total volume of over 162,000 tons of waste. The relocation of the landfill was approved by the People's Committee of Cai Rang District with an area of 1.95 hectares; the cost is 13.08 billion VND; the implementation time is 45 days, starting from November 15.
Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Tran Tien Dat - Deputy Director of the Project Management Board (PMU) of Cai Rang District Land Fund Development, Can Tho City - informed that up to now, the progress of landfill relocation has reached about 35%, the construction unit has basically completed the first layer and is preparing to dig the second layer.
“Due to the heavy rain in the past few days, the relocation of the landfill has been affected. The Project Management Board is coordinating with the construction unit to discuss the construction plan and measures, and to mobilize equipment and workers to compensate for the days off due to the rain,” said Mr. Dat.
Currently, the units are working day and night. The machines and equipment operate non-stop, and the workers are divided into shifts, working continuously from morning until about 10pm every day.
Racing to deliver the site on time as committed
Regarding the environmental protection plan, during the process of digging and unloading garbage, Mr. Dat said that the unit has measures to treat odors and control insects with biological products. Every week, the Project Management Board invites the testing unit to collect samples for testing. In case the odor exceeds the prescribed standards, the Board will stop the process for treatment. However, since the implementation, the odor results have not exceeded the prescribed level.
According to Mr. Dat, the process of transferring waste is divided into 4 layers, each layer is dug up and transported to the landfill area. Waste is moved from the cleared area to the neighboring area within the existing landfill. After completing the first layer, the construction unit will proceed to dig the next layers to complete according to the design.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tung - representative of the construction unit of landfill No. 8 - said that currently at the construction site there are nearly 40 workers and about 20 machines and equipment, including motor vehicles, loading and transporting vehicles and other auxiliary vehicles.
“To compensate for the amount of work stopped during the rainy days, we are currently thoroughly monitoring the work and progress, urgently working overtime at night. In the near future, we will mobilize more human resources and machinery to hand over the site on time as committed,” Mr. Tung emphasized.
Previously, on the afternoon of December 15, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his delegation inspected the Can Tho - Ca Mau Expressway in Hau Giang Province. The Prime Minister requested the Can Tho City People's Committee to direct departments, branches, and local authorities to completely handle the relocation of the landfill on the IC2 - National Highway 1 connection route, handing over 100% of the site in December 2024.
According to the My Thuan Project Management Board (investor), up to now, the construction output of the entire Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway project has reached about 56%; the site clearance work has handed over the connecting route to 99%; currently, there are 200m remaining in the connecting route in Can Tho due to landfill No. 8, and the relocation is expected to be completed before December 31.
