Limiting bad breath, reducing urban flooding
The Bau Ca Lake and Song Dao Canal renovation project is invested by the Quang Ngai Provincial Land Fund Development Center, starting from June 23, 2025. Implementation period is 180 days. The construction unit is Quang Ngai Urban Environment Joint Stock Company. The total investment is over 7.9 billion VND. Expected to be completed on December 20, 2025.
According to the investor, the project will dredge and renovate Bau Ca Lake to reach the designed capacity of about 142,000m3 of water; dredge water hyacinth, grass, waste, loose mud, thick mud and transport to Nghia Ky landfill. After dredging, it will provide microorganisms, kill algae and deodorize for 30 days and maintain for 5 months.
At the same time, the Dao River canal was cleared with an area of about 10,500m2; raising the bottom of the Dao River canal creates a 0.1% slope from the discharge location of Bau Ca lake to Tra Khuc river to prevent stagnant water and mud in the dry season. Raising the average bottom height by 30 cm is equal to the length of the canal over 375m.

According to Mr. Bui Duc Thuan - Head of the Project Management and Land Fund Development Department of Quang Ngai province, before implementing the project, Bau Ca Lake was overgrown with wild plants, tangled crab ropes, and water hyacinth canopy. The lake was filled 85cm above the designed lake bottom elevation. The water in the lake is polluted, giving off a foul smell, algae and harmful microorganisms thrive.
The goal of the project is to ensure the capacity of Bau Ca Lake is in accordance with the design, contributing to limiting urban flooding during the rainy season; preventing the generation of foul odors to the surrounding environment, ensuring urban aesthetics and water quality in the lake, protecting the environment of pond and lake water sources, creating urban aesthetics...
The project is being implemented, people enthusiastically support
For many years, Bau Ca regulating lake has been a place to store domestic wastewater in many wards in the center of Quang Ngai province. Due to not dredging for many years, the lake has been silted up, limiting the ability to contain water, affecting urban drainage, and is part of the cause of local flooding during the rainy season.
Wastewater from the lake and the Song Dao canal leading to wastewater from Bau Ca regulating lake is also lying in the open, running along the residential area before being discharged directly into the Tra Khuc river, also emitting a foul smell. Therefore, dredging and treating odor in Bau Ca regulating lake is very urgent, enthusiastically supported by the people.

Talking to reporters, Ms. Pham Thi Nhu Hoa (residing in group 2, Nghia Lo ward) said that her house is located next to Bau Ca regulating lake. Since 2010, the lake has often emitted a strong stench, especially in the hot season. In the rainy season, every time the lake water rises, snake and cowps enter the house, causing people to always live in a state of insecurity.
"The State has invested money to dredge and renovate Bau Ca regulating lake, and everyone and the people living around here are excited. Hopefully, after the dredging is completed, the lake will be clean and beautiful, no more foul odor, so that people can live with peace of mind" - Ms. Hoa expressed.
Speaking to Lao Dong Newspaper reporter, Mr. Phan Xuan Dinh - Technical Officer of Quang Ngai Urban Environment Joint Stock Company - said that Bau Ca regulating lake is over 3 hectares wide, with a mud dredging volume of nearly 32,000m3. According to the plan to be implemented for 180 days, the construction unit is currently mobilizing dozens of mud trucks, 6 excavators, and 1 bulldozer to focus on dredging.
The volume of dredged mud will be transported to Nghia Ky landfill, treated according to technical regulations, ensuring environmental hygiene. "The implementation period is 180 days, however, if the weather is favorable, in August 2025, the construction unit will basically handle the dredging volume" - Mr. Dinh said.
