On July 9, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Hue City said that the initial cause of scattered cage-raised fish deaths on the Bo River was local oxygen deficiency in the early morning.
After receiving feedback about the phenomenon of fish deaths from July 5, the Department of Agriculture and Environment directed the Sub-Department of Fisheries to coordinate with the People's Committees of Kim Tra ward, Quang Dien commune and Dan Dien commune to conduct actual inspections.
According to statistics, fish deaths occurred in 79/1,850 cages (about 3%), with total damaged output estimated at about 12 tons.
Quick inspection results at the scene showed that the initial cause was a decrease in oxygen content in the water. Some households had aerators but the equipment was broken, while many cages were not equipped with aerators and the fish release density was quite high.
To limit damage, the Sub-Department of Fisheries requires farmers to collect all dead fish for destruction in accordance with regulations, not to throw them into the environment; and at the same time implement technical measures such as leveling cages, creating flow and maintaining aeration from 0 to 2 am.
Functional sectors also recommend that farmers supplement vitamin C, minerals and appropriate preparations to increase the resistance of fish; and closely monitor weather developments to proactively respond to hot sun, drought, water shortage or extreme rain.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Hue City, previously the unit issued many documents warning about the risk of water shortage due to the impact of El Nino, and at the same time guiding localities and farms to proactively take risk prevention measures.
