Information from the Traffic Police Department (CSGT) of the Ministry of Public Security said that from July 1, 2026, Decree No. 241/2026/ND-CP of the Government on amending and supplementing a number of articles of Decree No. 165/2024/ND-CP detailing and guiding the implementation of a number of articles of the Road Law and Article 77 of the Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety officially takes effect.
According to new regulations, pickup trucks with double cabs (pickup trucks) and van trucks with a total weight not exceeding 3,500kg are allowed to organize traffic as for cars.
This means that when traveling on roads, areas or within the time frame prescribed for cars, pickup trucks and van trucks under 3.5 tons, traffic organization regulations similar to cars will be applied, except for cases where competent authorities have separate restrictions.
However, the Traffic Police Department emphasized that this is only a regulation on traffic organization, not changing the classification of vehicles.
Accordingly, pickup trucks with double cabs and van trucks under 3.5 tons are still identified as trucks according to regulations on vehicle registration, inspection, lifespan, as well as other relevant legal regulations.
In other words, being organized traffic like a car does not mean that pickup trucks or van trucks under 3.5 tons are converted into cars.
Vehicle owners must still fully comply with the legal regulations applicable to trucks, except for regulations on traffic organization according to Decree No. 241/2026/ND-CP.
According to the Traffic Police Department, the regulation adjustment aims to create more convenience for people and businesses when participating in traffic, while being consistent with the reality of traffic organization and improving management efficiency, ensuring traffic order and safety.
Based on current law, the classification of pickup trucks is applied according to Circular No. 53/2024/TT-BGTVT dated November 15, 2024 of the Ministry of Transport (now the Ministry of Construction), regulating the classification of road vehicles and recognizable signs of motor vehicles using clean energy, green energy, and environmentally friendly.
Accordingly, pickup trucks (single cabs or double cabs) are divided into two types:
Pickup cars: belong to passenger cars up to 8 seats (excluding driver's seat), item 2, Appendix I Circular 53.
Pickup truck: belongs to the common type of truck, items 3, 4, Appendix IV of Circular 53.
