According to the report of Rach Gia Airport, the Port currently has a land area of 58.56 hectares, a level 3C airport used by both the civil and military. The airport is not capable of receiving regular and unusual domestic flights, private aircraft, military aircraft, training aircraft and other aircraft when licensed for operation.
With the current infrastructure of runways, taxiways, and aircraft parking lots, it is not possible to receive large aircraft with long flights leading to Rach Gia Airport, which is operating below the designed capacity of the terminal. The role of tourism gateway, economic development, local trade and regional logistics services as well as ensuring national defense and security for the Southwest region of the Fatherland has not been promoted.
According to Rach Gia Airport, the development orientation until 2030 has also been reported by the Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) to the Ministry of Finance to review and balance capital allocation and investment plan to upgrade and expand Rach Gia Airport immediately after the Rach Gia Airport Detailed Planning is approved with the scale of upgrading and expanding Rach Gia Airport to the airport standards of level 4C, reaching military level level II (and in the future it can develop to level 4E).

Extend the runway to about 2,400 m, expand the airport, receive A320/A321. Increasing the capacity of the terminal to 1 million passengers/year. Invest in modern flight safety and operational equipment; associated with promoting the application of science and technology in the management and exploitation of the Port to ensure efficiency, expand the flight network, increase exploitation capacity, serve economic development - especially tourism, trade in the region as well as contribute to ensuring national defense and security of the Southwest border area.
Recently, a working group of the An Giang Provincial People's Committee worked and conducted a survey to build, upgrade and expand Rach Gia Airport. According to Chairman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee Ho Van Mung, the expansion and upgrading of Rach Gia Airport will help receive large aircraft, expand the flight network, increase the frequency of operations, thereby contributing to promoting the socio-economic development, tourism and trade of An Giang province.
Notably, Rach Gia Airport also acts as a reserve port for Phu Quoc International Airport during the ASEAN Summit Week 2027.
Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Ho Van Mung assigned the Department of Construction to issue a document advising the Provincial People's Committee to send ACV to participate in the investment and agree on the project completion time for the third quarter of 2026. In 2025, investment procedures must be completed and construction must begin in January 2026.
Regarding site clearance, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Ho Van Mung requested the People's Committee of Rach Gia Ward, the Department of Agriculture and Environment, and Rach Gia Airport to urgently review the status of management, re-determine the guaranteed land management, and complete before October 5.
The People's Committee of Rach Gia Ward reports to the Provincial People's Committee, proposes further solutions and implements a plan to mobilize and reclaim encroached land; conducts land recovery work, ensuring the rights and obligations of the people according to regulations.
The Department of Tourism strengthens tourism promotion and advertising, increasing the number of visitors. During the investment period, upgrading and expanding the airport, there are documents sent to airlines to study and open routes. The Department of Construction advised the Provincial People's Committee to issue a document proposing to adjust flight times and increase capacity.
According to Decision No. 648/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister approving the Master Plan for the development of the national airport system for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, Rach Gia Airport is planned to be an domestic airport by 2030; level 4C scale ( exploiting A320/A321 aircraft and equivalent); designed capacity of 500,000 passengers/year; land use scale of 200ha.
