By early December 2024, the total commercial power generation capacity of projects in Quang Tri had only reached over 1,100 MW, while the target by 2025 was 3,000 MW, and by 2030 it would reach about 9,000 - 10,000 MW.
Mr. Nguyen Truong Khoa - Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Quang Tri province said that the industry and trade sector has proactively coordinated with the Ministry of Industry and Trade and related ministries and branches to supplement the Power Plan VIII on the development of wind power projects, solar power projects, gas power projects and LNG projects...
The implementation of local energy projects is currently facing difficulties. Quang Tri province needs to overcome difficulties in site clearance to implement investment in power source projects, power line projects and transformer stations in the Power Plan VIII. Accelerate the completion of power source projects that have been approved for investment and are being implemented under the adjusted Power Plan VII with a total capacity of 517MW (10 wind power projects with a capacity of 394MW and 7 small hydropower projects with a total capacity of 93MW). Implement the Power Plan VIII when there is an approval decision for the 12 submitted projects, striving to have a total commercial operating capacity of 1,640.5MW in the whole province by the end of 2025.
Mr. Nguyen Dang Quang - Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Council of Quang Tri province said that the locality aims to have a commercial power generation capacity of 3,000 MW by 2025, and about 9,000 - 10,000 MW by 2030 to become the energy center of the region.
“Up to now, it has only reached over 1,100 MW, so the goal of building Quang Tri into an energy center is difficult to achieve,” Mr. Nguyen Dang Quang affirmed.
The reason why the target set by Quang Tri is difficult to achieve is because some large investment projects in the electricity industry are slow to implement or have stopped.
For example, the Quang Tri 1 BOT coal-fired thermal power plant project with a capacity of 1,320 MW and a total investment of over VND55,000 billion started construction in 2019, but then the investor, Thai Power International Company, asked to stop the implementation. The Hai Lang LNG Power Center project, phase 1, started construction in early 2022 with a capacity of 1,500 MW and a total investment of nearly VND54,000 billion, but is still facing difficulties and obstacles...
During the visit and working session of General Secretary To Lam in Quang Tri in mid-October 2024, the General Secretary emphasized that Quang Tri has a lot of potential and great advantages, especially clean energy sources, abundant green energy sources and a lot of room for developing renewable energy sources. Therefore, in the spirit of creating conditions and maximum support to promote the socio-economic development of Quang Tri province, General Secretary To Lam requested the Party Central Committee to direct the Government, ministries, central agencies and branches to study and support Quang Tri province to remove bottlenecks and difficulties to continue development. In particular, it will study and supplement the development planning of wind power, solar power, offshore wind power projects and LNG power projects and receive electricity from Laos.
