Gia Lai - The government handles illegal sand and gravel mining acts, not allowing negative impacts on the environment and the flow of the Kon River.

On July 6, Mr. Mai Xuan Hau - Chairman of Binh An Commune People's Committee, Gia Lai province said that in the past time, the commune government has strengthened control and handled the situation of illegal sand mining in the area.

Currently, the exploitation of riverbed sand and gravel is no longer as hot and rampant as before, after being cracked down and handled by functional agencies. Occasionally, there are still a few cases taking place sporadically, mainly due to local people arbitrarily exploiting, the sand mining situation on the Kon River has basically stabilized," Mr. Hau said.

Binh An commune authorities recommend that people not participate in mining, transporting, buying and selling sand and minerals without being licensed by competent authorities. People are also advised not to collude, cover up or consume minerals of illegal origin. All violations will be detected and strictly handled according to the provisions of law.

In the coming time, Binh An commune will continue to strengthen patrols and inspections on river routes, alluvial ground areas and areas at risk of illegal mineral exploitation.

At the same time, the unit coordinates with functional agencies to promote propaganda and mobilize people to strictly comply with regulations on management and protection of mineral resources.

It is known that the Kon River section passing through Binh An and Tay Son communes has been a hotspot for illegal sand mining for many years.

Previously, on December 25, 2025, under the direction of the Gia Lai Provincial Police and the Criminal Police Department (Ministry of Public Security), hundreds of officers and soldiers along with vehicles and equipment simultaneously inspected two illegal sand mining points in Phu Lac village (Binh An commune) and Vinh Loc village (Tay Son commune).

Through inspection, functional forces seized 11 dump trucks, 4 excavators, 3 cars, 3 motorbikes, 29 mobile phones, 8 walkie-talkies, about 410m3 of sand and many related exhibits; and temporarily detained 39 people for investigation and handling according to regulations.
