Landslides spread, threatening people's lives
The impact of storm No. 6 at the end of October 2024 causing heavy rain has caused complicated riverbank erosion in Hai Lang, Trieu Phong and Cam Lo districts, Quang Tri province.
In Trieu Phong district, the Vinh Dinh river bank through Van Hoa village (Trieu Hoa commune) has had 3 serious landslides with a total length of about 1,000m. The landslides are deeply feeding near people's houses, only 2-3m away, causing 6 households (25 people) to face the risk of their houses being swept away if not handled promptly. In particular, the DH.47C route - the traffic artery in the area - is also seriously threatened.
In Hai Lang district, two landslides in Hai Hung and Hai Lam communes with a total length of nearly 900m damaged the inter-village concrete road, creating large frog jaw and eating worms close to people's houses, directly affecting dozens of households. In addition, the area of Thuong Xa village, Hai Thuong commune is also recording a new landslide with a length of 200m, close to the inter-village road, causing unsafety for people and vehicles.
In Cam Lo, the bank of Hieu River through Cam Hieu Commune was eroded about 350m, with some sections eating 0.5-1m deep into the asphalt road surface. This is a unique inter-commune road serving production, rescue, and daily life of people in the Northern Hieu River area. If not reinforced in time, the consequences will be very serious.
Proposal for urgent investment before the storm season
Faced with the serious landslide situation, localities have proactively reported and made urgent recommendations. In Trieu Hoa commune alone, from 2023 to now, there have been at least 5 documents sent to the district and province requesting support for the construction of a protective embankment. However, due to limited budget, the repair work has only stopped at the temporary reinforcement level.
Similarly, Hai Lang district has allocated 150 million VND to handle some landslides in the short term and has repeatedly submitted support requests. Cam Lo district has also spent 466 million VND to temporarily repair the landslide in Cam Hieu, but the situation is still complicated and at risk of expanding.
Facing the risk of landslides continued to threaten the safety of people's life and property, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Tri province proposed the provincial People's Committee to direct the synchronous implementation of urgent solutions. In particular, emphasizing the requirements of the Department of Finance to coordinate with relevant units to review, balance the budget, advise and allocate funds in time.
Localities are also required to strengthen warning measures in dangerous areas, temporarily reinforce vulnerable sections, and organize propaganda and instruct people to prepare response plans and evacuate in case of emergency.
