The heroic historical moment of the past is still present
Speaking at the ceremony, the representative of historical witnesses, Mr. Nguyen Thu - a veteran of Hai Ba Trung district, former officer of Regiment 102 - Capital Regiment, Division 308 - Pioneer Army Division said that remembering October 10, 1954, his heart was filled with memories. At that time, he was just 22 years old, full of youthful aspirations and enthusiasm, an infantry platoon leader of the Capital Regiment, Division 308 - Pioneer Army Division.
Currently, he has turned 92 years old, but the memories of the glorious historical moment of the past are always present, echoing in his mind, especially the bravery and resilience of the soldiers who fought heroically, not sparing their blood and bones for 60 days and nights to protect Hanoi, to ensure the safety of our army's intelligent retreat across the Red River to the Viet Bac resistance base, to carry out a long-term resistance war.
After 9 years of hardship, deprivation and sacrifice, our army and people achieved the great Dien Bien Phu victory that "resounded throughout the five continents and shook the world", forcing the French colonialists to sign the Geneva Agreement on a ceasefire in Vietnam.
Mr. Nguyen Thu said that he and the soldiers of Division 308 were assigned to take over the beloved capital. Everyone was excited and moved. On the way back, Division 308 held a celebration ceremony at Trai Co area, Hiep Hoa district, Bac Giang province. People from the liberated areas and temporarily occupied areas of Bac Ninh, Hanoi, and Phuc Yen eagerly poured out to welcome the victorious army.
“At that time, each of us soldiers was given a "Dien Bien Phu Victory Badge" by President Ho Chi Minh. We all cherished and respectfully pinned that badge on our left chest, near our hearts, considering it a priceless keepsake, to preserve for life and pass on to future generations,” Mr. Nguyen Thu recalled.
On the morning of October 10, 1954, the 308th Division, commanded by Major General Vuong Thua Vu, divided into many large wings, launched a march to take over the capital. Hanoi seemed to be revived. Hundreds of thousands of people, from old to young, poured into the streets, wearing their best clothes, carrying flags and flowers, joyfully and proudly singing to welcome the victorious army. That glorious historical moment of that year will forever be indelible in the hearts of every child of Hanoi.
