National Highway 22 is a vital route connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Moc Bai International Border Gate (Tay Ninh), playing an important role in trade between Vietnam and ASEAN countries.
Currently, the road surface of National Highway 22 is only 36 - 40 m wide, including two car lanes and one motorbike lane on each side, however, the large traffic volume, combined with the narrow road surface, often causes congestion in this area, especially during rush hours in the morning and afternoon.
Ms. Nguyen Thanh Hien (Ba Diem commune) said that the congestion and traffic jams during rush hour on National Highway 22 have been going on for a long time.
"On rainy days with accidents, this road is prone to prolonged traffic jams. Hearing the news of the road expansion and overpass construction, people in this area are very happy, hoping the project will be constructed soon to reduce traffic congestion and make travel more convenient," said Ms. Hien.
Similarly, Mr. Tran Quang Duy, a motorbike taxi driver on National Highway 22, said: "This is a route where container trucks, trucks, and motorbikes travel together, although there is a lane division, the road is quite small compared to travel needs. Expanding roads and building overpasses is too necessary. I just hope the progress is not delayed like many other projects," Mr. Duy shared.

Previously, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee agreed on a detailed plan to implement Component Project 3: Investment in construction, renovation, and upgrading of National Highway 22 (from An Suong intersection to Ring Road 3) under the form of public-private partnership (PPP), BOT contract (build - operate - transfer).
According to the plan, National Highway 22 will be expanded to 60m with 10 lanes, starting in 2026 and completed in 2028.
Component project 3 has a total investment of more than VND 4,190 billion. National Highway 22 (from An Suong intersection to Ring Road 3) over 8 km long will be expanded to 60 m, accommodating 10 lanes. 4 lanes between the maximum speed of 80 km/h and 6 lanes on both sides with a maximum speed of 60 km/h.

On the route, 7 overpasses will be built at major intersections to reduce congestion and increase traffic capacity, including: Nguyen Anh Thu, Nguyen Thi Soc - Nha Vuong, Le Thi Ha, Tran Van Muoi - Ba Trieu, Ly Thuong Kiet - Nguyen Van Bua, Nguyen Thi Nuoi and Duong Cong Khi - Le Loi.
